In a bizarre case of hypocrisy from the left, Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan, a Democratic Connecticut state representative, was arrested after allegedly shoplifting from a Target in his home state, with police telling the press that it wasn’t the first time he had been caught red-handed stealing.
For context, Connecticut State Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan (D-Bethel) was reportedly caught shoplifting from a Target in Bethel, Connecticut, and arrested on June 23, 2025. According to the police, the state representative tried to exit the store without paying for about $30 worth of merchandise and was spotted by the staff based on previous instances of theft.
In addition, according to NBC Connecticut, Rep. Allie-Brennan was identified by the police and taken into custody, leading to the issuing of a misdemeanor summons for sixth-degree larceny. In response, the state representative issued a statement saying that he was “in a rush” to visit his grandmother in the hospital, adding that the store did not have bags available.
Moreover, the representative’s statement was both defensive and unapologetic. He wrote, “I was in a rush to bring items to my grandmother in the hospital, the store didn’t have bags and I was juggling multiple purchases.” In addition, Rep. Allie-Brennan denied having a history of shoplifting, saying, “While I do not have a record, I take full responsibility for the error and am working through the legal processes to resolve the matter quickly and respectfully.”
Continuing, the representative said that he respects the law “and Target’s right to enforce their loss prevention policy,” adding that he is “committed to serving my community with transparency and integrity.” In addition, according to CT Mirror, State House Speaker Matt Ritter (D-Hartford) claimed that he had spoken to the representative about his error, saying that Allie-Brennan “recognizes the high standard to which I hold our members.”
Furthermore, Speaker Ritter said that Allie-Brennan was “taking responsibility for inadvertently leaving the Target self-checkout without scanning several items.” However, a police report shared with CT Mirror explained that the state representative was recognized and caught by the Target loss prevention team because of “previous unreported larcenies.”
According to his bio, Rep. Allie-Brennan serves as Chief Majority Whip in the Connecticut State House and represents the state’s 2nd Assembly district. Furthermore, his bio states that he is “an openly gay legislator” and “a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and representation.”

Allie-Brennan claims that he has been “at the forefront of shaping energy policy” since 2018, adding that he has devoted a significant portion of his time in public office to “pushing for renewable investments, stronger oversight of utilities, and greater protections for consumers.” His bio adds that he serves on the state’s Energy and Technology, General Law, and Insurance and Real Estate Committees.
