Newly released police bodycam footage presented in the criminal trial of disgraced Democrat Senator Nicole Mitchell paints a humiliating picture of her indefensible actions, which put her at risk of spending 20 years in prison if convicted after she broke into her stepmother’s home in April 2024.

For background, State Sen. Nicole Mitchell (D-MN-DFL), was arrested on April 22, 2024, after she broke into her stepmother’s home, claiming that she was there to retrieve items belonging to her late father. After her arrest, Sen. Mitchell was initially charged with first-degree burglary, but another charge, one count of “possession of burglary or theft tools,” was reportedly later added.

Furthermore, Sen. Mitchell’s trial began on July 14, 2025, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, after the senator reportedly pleaded not guilty to both charges. During the trial, the senator’s stepmother testified, saying that when Mitchell broke into her home, she felt “extremely violated,” adding, “It was frightening. I didn’t dare to stay there. I moved out.” Moreover, when asked about whether her stepdaughter had her best interests in mind, the stepmother said, “I don’t believe so. Nicole never let me get close to her.”

In addition, on the second day of the trial, bodycam footage was shown that provides a first-person view of an officer entering the basement of Sen. Mitchell’s stepmother’s home. The officer then finds Mitchell in a bathroom wearing an all-black outfit. When told to get on the ground and put her hands behind her back, Mitchell complies, going on to identify herself to her stepmother, saying that she was “just trying to get some of my dad’s things because you wouldn’t talk to me anymore.”

Importantly, the bodycam footage shows that Sen. Mitchell defended herself and attempted to make an excuse for her behavior by telling the police officer who apprehended her that her stepmother is “paranoid” and has Alzheimer’s Disease. In response, her stepmother accused her of “trying to get money.” After Mitchell was taken to the officer’s squad car, see said, “I know I did something bad.”

Then, the senator went on to say that her stepmother had “progressively cut off the family” due to her Alzheimer’s-induced paranoia, going on to defend herself again and say she “just wanted to get a couple of my dad’s mementos.” Based on the footage, prosecuting attorney Brian McDonald said that Mitchel “was caught red-handed.”

Moreover, McDonald responded to the footage by saying, “This case won’t be about speculation. It won’t be about trying to read between any lines.” He added, “It will be about what the defendant did, what she admitted to, and what you will see and hear with your own eyes and ears.” The attorney went on to say, “No amount of grief or frustration can justify a home burglary,” McDonald said. “Do not get distracted.”

On the other hand, Defense attorney Bruce Ringstrom Jr. called his client “a person who always gets things done,” adding, “Her persistence can be counted on. So when problems come up in the family, she takes the initiative to fix those problems.” McDonald responded by saying, “What matters for burglary is that they got in without permission and they intended to commit a crime inside the building.”
