Recently, a Detroit pastor praised former President Donald Trump for paying a visit to the Motor City during an event with religious leaders over the weekend. The Trump campaign championed a black voter coalition during the roundtable discussion at 180 Church.
As black voters are voicing increasing levels of frustration with the Biden administration, Trump is capitalizing on the voting demographic. Subsequently, the former presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s polling among black voters has improved tremendously since the 2020 election.
“President Trump, I’m so humbled that you would be here. President Obama never came to the hood, so to speak, right? President Joe Biden, he went to the big NAACP dinner, but he never came to the hood. So thank you,” the pastor said. Trump replied to a cheering audience, “My honor.”
Furthermore, the Trump campaign also announced that former Detroit Democratic Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick would endorse the former president’s reelection bid. Kilpatrick was serving a 28-year prison sentence before Trump commuted it in 2021 after he had spent six years in prison.
“I can never thank President Trump enough for what he’s done for me and my family by giving me freedom,” Kilpatrick said, per the Trump campaign. “But I believe this election and the issues involved are personal to every family and every person in America.”
Prominent black Republicans joined the GOP frontrunner at the religious event, such as Dr. Ben Carson, Rep. John James (R-MI), and Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL). Some have suggested Trump may choose Carson as his running mate.
The Trump campaign further illustrated why black voters are turning to Trump in increasing numbers, stating, “Historic rates of Black voters now support President Trump, and the reason is simple: Black voters know that President Trump is the only presidential candidate who can deliver results on day one because he already has.” Watch a clip from the event below:
Moreover, a black Detroit business owner who was participating in the discussion lauded Trump’s efforts to lift up minority communities across the country. They highlighted how economic conditions were far better under the Trump administration compared to the last several years under Biden.
“When you were in office, President Trump, the African American community, the Latino community, the Arabic community, we all soared,” the entrepreneur said. “The money was pumping when you were in office. As a restaurant operator, I’m telling you that the money was pumping, and the money is not pumping now.”
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung pointed out that Trump has been making it a point to get out and interact with everyday citizens, as he demonstrated in Detroit. He criticized Joe Biden for hosting “glitzy” fundraisers for his “elitist” constituents.
“President Trump will be campaigning and meeting everyday Americans in Detroit, Mich., an area decimated by Joe Biden’s failed policies,” Cheung said “Meanwhile … Biden will be at a glitzy fundraiser in Hollywood with his elitist, out-of-touch celebrity benefactors that own him.”
Polling from earlier this year indicates that former President Trump’s polling with minorities has substantially improved from the last election, in which he has more than doubled his support within the black community.
