Trump’s Department of Justice made history with an operation that led to the arrest of over 300 medical professionals on charges of fraud, which the DOJ said had resulted in $14.6 billion of taxpayer dollars, with Attorney General Pam Bondi noting that the operation was “record-setting,” and more than doubled the prior record of $6 billion.

For background, during a press conference and in a subsequent press release on June 30, 2025, the Department of Justice announced the success of National Health Care Fraud Takedown, a coordinated operation that involved federal and state law enforcement agencies and targeted medical professionals who used their positions to commit fraud.

Speaking to reporters, Matthew R. Galeotti, Head of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, provided background on the operation, saying, “The DOJ has criminally charged 324 defendants, including 96 doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other licensed medical professionals, in 50 federal districts and 12 State Attorneys General’s Offices across the United States, for their alleged participation in various health care fraud schemes involving over $14.6B in intended loss.”

Furthermore, the Department of Justice provided more information regarding the investigation and arrests in a June 30, 2025, press release, which described the operation as “an unprecedented effort to combat health care fraud schemes that exploit patients and taxpayers.” In a statement published with the press release, Attorney General Pam Bondi added, “Make no mistake – this administration will not tolerate criminals who line their pockets with taxpayer dollars while endangering the health and safety of our communities.”

In addition, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., described the operation as part of his agency’s goal of “making healthcare accessible and affordable to all Americans,” saying, “HHS will aggressively work with our law enforcement partners to eliminate the pervasive health care fraud that bedeviled this agency under the former administration and drove up costs.”

In the press release, Galeotti said his division is “intensely committed ” to rooting out cases of healthcare fraud, adding that such schemes “often result in physical patient harm through medically unnecessary treatments or failure to provide the correct treatments” and “contribute to our nationwide opioid epidemic and exacerbate controlled substance addiction.”

Moreover, Galeotti explained that such cases of fraud were perpetrated by healthcare workers who stole money that “hardworking Americans contribute to pay for the care of their elders and other vulnerable citizens.” He added, “The Division’s Health Care Fraud Unit and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices stand united with our law enforcement partners in this fight, and we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to protect the integrity of our health care programs for the American people.”
