WATCH: CNN Calls Out “Embarrassing” Series of “Screwups” From Fani Willis After Certain Charges Dropped Against Trump, Co-Defendants

CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig recently commented on a significant update in the Georgia election interference case against former President Donald Trump.  During a Wednesday appearance on CNN’s “Newsroom,” Honig noted that Fulton County, GA, Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee dismissed multiple charges in the case led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

While Honig maintained that this development does not change the type of evidence that could be introduced in the case, the dropped charge amounts to an “embarrassing” mistake for Fani Willis and her team of prosecutors.

“I don’t think this ruling changes the type of evidence that the DA’s going to be able to introduce, but it does knock out some of the charges and look, it’s embarrassing for prosecutors. It’s a screwup by prosecutors when you bring a charge, and then a judge throws it out before it even goes to trial,” the senior legal analyst said.

Honing continued listing several other “screwups” that occurred throughout the case, calling out the overarching conflict of interest in the case.  The case has faced significant controversy over the questionable relationship between Fani Willis and special prosecutor Nathan Wade, whom she appointed to the case.  The legal analyst additionally noted public statements Willis has made that allegedly violated “ethics of prosecutorial standards.”

“There have been several screwups, frankly, by the DA throughout the history of this case. Going back to the investigative phase, the DA got herself disqualified from a small piece of the case because she created a political conflict of interest. The judge who was overseeing the grand jury removed Fani Willis from the case. We’ve seen Fani Willis make public statements in the church and elsewhere that have now been called into question that I think violate the ethics of prosecutorial rules and now we’ve seen six of the charges thrown out of the case and unlike the conflict of interest issue, this does go to the charges against the defendant. This does go to the indictment itself,” he said.  “There is still a case. The lead charge, the racketeering case is still in place, but this is a setback.”

The American Tribune reported on the news that Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee dismissed six of the forty-one charges against Trump and some of his co-defendants in the case.  Judge McAfee wrote in his order on Wednesday about the “fatal” lack of detail in the charges.

“The Court’s concern is less that the State has failed to allege sufficient conduct of the Defendants – in fact it has alleged an abundance. However, the lack of detail concerning an essential legal element is, in the undersigned’s opinion, fatal,” he said.

He added more detail about the lack of detail in what was allegedly solicited, stating, “As written, these six counts contain all the essential elements of the crimes but fail to allege sufficient detail regarding the nature of their commission, i.e., the underlying felony solicited.”
