The woke mayor of Chicago has come under fire from conservatives online after announcing that his city is offering race-based grants to black Chicagoans as a form of reparations for slavery, with the mayor’s office stating that its newly developed “Black Reparations Task Force” will create a formal “framework for reparations” within the city.

For context, on June 17, 2025, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order that officially launched his city’s “Black Reparations Task Force,” which was created to examine policies that the mayor claims have “harmed Black Chicagoans” and provide race-based grants to the city’s black residents. On June 16, a video of Mayor Johnson announcing the executive order went viral on X, with countless conservatives calling out the mayor for “blatant racism.”

In the viral video of Mayor Johnson, he said that the goal of the reparations program was to reclaim “ownership of our own communities,” adding, “That is the spirit of Juneteenth, you all. It is about reflecting on our past. Other cultures are taught to never forget.” He continued, “We need to be reminded as blacks here in Chicago and America: remembering our past and working towards a more just future; investing in black is not a criminal act.”

After the hugely popular End Wokeness X account posted the video, numerous conservative influencers weighed in and slammed the mayor’s decision to invest specifically in black Chicagoans. Gunther Eagleman, whose account has over 1.4 million followers, wrote, “Nothing to see here except blatant racism.” Another popular conservative account wrote, “This is ridiculously racist.”

Moreover, in a press release published by Mayor Johnson’s office on April 23, 2025, the mayor spoke in detail about the rationale behind his decision to call for reparations, saying, “This Reparations Task Force represents a pivotal moment in our city’s history and my administration’s ongoing pursuit to repair the generations of harm our people have endured.”

Continuing, the mayor said that his intention was to bring together “diverse voices and expertise from across our communities” to create “Chicago’s first comprehensive roadmap for reparations that will build a more equitable future that centers justice for all.”

In addition, the Chief Equity Officer for the city of Chicago, Carla Kupe, said that the goal of the reparations program was “a Chicago where every person’s dignity is honored and protected, and where everyone has what they need to thrive.” Kupe added, “To realize this vision, the City has a responsibility to acknowledge and address historic and present-day racial inequities.”

In a similar vein, Stephanie Coleman, Chairwoman of the Aldermanic Black Caucus, also issued a statement in the press release, saying that “Chicago has led the nation in advancing justice and equity.” She added, “I am proud that we are showing our commitment to investing in the documentation and reparation of harm. Together, we are not just making history, we are correcting it.”
