As Texas and the Biden Administration remain at odds over both border barriers erected by Texas to keep out illegal immigrants and Texas’ efforts to handle processing and deportation of illegal immigrants itself instead of allowing federal border officials to handle the issue, the Border Patrol Union chimed in to discuss what the Border Patrol plans to do about the situation.
As background, the Supreme Court found in favor of the Biden Administration on Monday, January 22, in a ruling granting an emergency appeal to allow federal agents to cut border wire erected by Texas. Further, Texas recently took over Shelby Park near the Eagle Pass border crossing to defend its border and has been refusing to allow federal agents to enter. Texas has indicated it will not comply with the Biden Administration’s demands to evacuate the park and has continued raising barbed wire despite the SCOTUS ruling.
A spokesperson for DHS, speaking on the matter, said, “Enforcement of immigration law is a federal responsibility. Rather than helping to reduce irregular migration, the State of Texas has only made it harder for frontline personnel to do their jobs and to apply consequences under the law. We can enforce our laws and administer them safely, humanely, and in an orderly way.”
In any case, posting on X about the situation, the Border Patrol Union wrote, “Rank-and file BP agents are not going to start arresting TX NG members for following their LAWFUL orders. That’s fake news. TX NG and rank-and-file BP agents work together and respect each other’s jobs. Period. If TX NG members have LAWFUL orders, then they have to carry out those orders.”
Continuing, the union posted, “TX NG members realize that rank-and-file BP agents have their orders as well. Lawful orders, no matter how unpopular or distasteful amongst rank-and-file agents, must be followed. Unlawful orders (as determined by competent legal counsel and not what some outhouse lawyer behind a keyboard says) will not be followed.”
Concluding, the group wrote, “Rank-and-file BP agents appreciate and respect what TX has been doing to defend their state in the midst of this catastrophe that the Biden Admin has unleashed on America. We want to be perfectly clear, there is no fight between rank-and-file BP agents and the TX NG, Gov. Abott, or TX DPS. It may make flashy headlines, but it simply isn’t true.”
Similarly, Fox News reported that a senior Border Patrol official informed it that the relationship between Border Patrol and Texas remains “strong” and that it has no plans to start cutting the razor wire border barriers that Texas has erected.
Such is what Fox News correspondent Griff Jenkins reported, saying the official said, “While this issue plays out in the courts, the relationship between Border Patrol, Texas DPS [Department of Public Safety], & TMD [Texas Military Dept.] remains strong. Our focus is and will always be the mission of protecting this country and its people. On the ground, we continue to work alongside these valuable partners in that endeavor.”
Continuing, the official reportedly said, “Bottom line: Border Patrol has no plans to remove infrastructure (c-wire) placed by Texas along the border. Our posture remains the same. If we need to access an area for emergency response, we will do so. When that happens, we will coordinate with Texas DPS & TMD.”
