Kansas City Chiefs kicker and outspoken Catholic Harrison Butker recently sustained a serious injury to his knee. In light of the setback, some leftist opponents of Butker have taken online to celebrate the bad news. Earlier this year, Butker sparked significant backlash after delivering a speech at the Benedictine College commencement ceremony where he expressed his conservative values at odds with modern-day feminism.
In his speech, Butker promoted conservative gender roles, encouraging women to embrace motherhood and homemaking as opposed to the fashionable trend of putting these values aside to pursue a career. He maintained that while a career and professional success can be important, greater joy is found in traditional family values.
Breaking the news last month, sports reporter Tom Pelissero wrote on X, “Sources: #Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is expected to miss 3-4 weeks and is likely headed to injured reserve with a left knee injury. Kansas City will have a new kicker Sunday at Buffalo.” The news garnered a variety of reactions, many of which celebrated in opposition to the kicker’s personal views.
One person replied, “Women seeing Harrison Butker get injured,” while sharing a video of women jumping and shouting for joy on what appears to be the former talk show of TV personality Ellen DeGeneres. Many others shared a clip of pop star Taylor Swift raising a glass with the word “karma” across the screen. Others mocked Butker’s Christian faith in various ways.
Defending Butker from the hoard of criticism, one user chimed in, “And here come the thousand comments on why Harrison Butker is the worst person in the NFL for stating what was common sense to everyone on Earth until 100 years ago. Something everyone actually still believes but simply won’t admit. This is why Trump won. The delusional mania.”
In Butker’s passionate, faith-based speech earlier this year, he said, “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.”
The professional kicker continued, “How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
