In a desperate bid to push back against President Trump’s agenda, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on his X account that he was forcing the reading of the entirety of the bill on the Senate floor, saying that the senators would “be here all night” if that was what it would take to delay the passing of the bill.
For context, on June 28, 2025, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Senate Minority Leader, wrote a series of X posts declaring that he was objecting to the passing of President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” and was forcing a full reading of the bill on the senate floor in a move that clearly seems intended to punish Senate Republicans.
Writing on June 28, Sen. Schumer began his announcement by humorously declaring that it was “BREAKING” news, adding, “I will object to Republicans moving forward on their Big, Ugly Bill without reading it on the Senate floor.” He continued, “Republicans won’t tell America what’s in the bill. So Democrats are forcing it to be read start to finish on the floor. We will be here all night if that’s what it takes to read it.”
In response to this initial post, Sen. Schumer was both praised and criticized in the comments section. The X user Charles Perreiera wrote, “This is exactly what leadership looks like. If Republicans are too afraid to let the American people see what’s actually in this monstrosity of a bill, then reading it word for word is the bare minimum.” On the other hand, another X user wrote, “If you’re forcing the bill to be read just to stall, not to actually understand it, that’s not transparency, it’s political theater.”
In a follow-up post on the same day, Sen. Schumer began by writing “NOW” in an attempt to add dramatic impact to his announcement. He continued, “I just objected to the Republicans moving forward on their Big, Ugly Bill without reading it on the Senate floor.”
Continuing, the senator attempted to attack the basis of the bill, saying that it was primarily going to benefit the richest of the rich. He wrote, “If Republicans actually want their own constituents to pay for tax breaks for billionaires at the expense of healthcare and food assistance, then at least they deserve the receipts.”
In response to this second post, Sen. Schumer got completely dismantled by commenters. The conservative influencer Paul A. Szypula wrote, “Schumer, shut up with your tax breaks for billionaires BS. Nobody is buying it.” He continued, “Want to see how the tax cuts actually pan out? So like I said, shut up. You’re a fossil. You should’ve retired decades ago.”

More commenters ripped into the senator as well, with the X user CallVoter writing, “You had two freaking months to read the bill.” Another user chimed in, “Accomplishing something yet nothing at all. The Democrat Party brand.”
