In another major freakout, Chuck Schumer wrote an angry letter questioning the work of DOGE and demanding that further records be released to verify that Elon Musk’s department is really saving Americans money, with Sen. Schumer also calling out the Office of Personnel Management in the same breath.
For context, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, into question on April 22, 2025, writing a letter that accused DOGE and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) of refusing to share information about government waste, fraud, and abuse with the public. Sen. Schumer made these demands despite the fact that DOGE has been forthcoming about the amount of money that its work has saved each American taxpayer, as well as the total amount of savings across the board.
In a letter addressed to Charles Ezell, the Acting Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Sen. Schumer began by demanding the release of documents related to the cancellation of a contract for OPM recruiting, which DOGE had cited as leading to $318 million in savings. Sen. Schumer wrote, “Despite DOGE’s claims, there is no record of this solicitation in any federal procurement databases.”
Moving on, Sen. Schumer pressed Director Ezell, saying that documents related to the contract were necessary because without them, it was “impossible to verify whether the savings claimed by DOGE are genuine.” The senator went on to say, “The public is left in the dark as to whether these savings are based on real, verifiable data.”
Additionally, Sen. Schumer criticized DOGE further, accusing the department of a “lack of transparency,” which he said “only raises further questions about the accuracy of DOGE’s reported savings and the effectiveness of cost-saving measures.” Sen. Schumer then called out OPM on the same front, saying, “The refusal to release essential records also raises concerns regarding OPM’s own internal processes and oversight mechanisms.”
Continuing, Sen. Schumer described DOGE as “stubbornly refusing to relate any information,” going on to say that the fact that OPM and DOGE are not working more closely together was “troubling.” Continuing, Sen. Schumer wrote, “The public has a right to access documents concerning DOGE’s reported savings.”
Concluding his letter, Sen. Schumer continued to criticize OPM for making it “impossible to determine whether the cancellation of this proposal resulted in the savings DOGE has claimed.” He continued, “The public has every right to know whether the savings DOGE claims from the cancellation of this solicitation are accurate.”

Sen. Schumer’s vitriolic criticism of DOGE came shortly after DOGE leader Elon Musk went on Sen. Ted Cruz’s podcast and described government fraud as being “overwhelming on the left,” adding that “[Democrats] give themselves extremely lavish, like, insane salaries, expense everything to the non-profit, buy jets and homes, and all sorts of things.”
