President Joe Biden keeps getting hit with bad news after his disastrously bad debate with former President Donald Trump. Some of the more recent news on that front came from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who told President Biden that there is now, in the wake of his debate, no way for him to win in her state.
Such is what Fox News Digital reported in a report on the conversation between the Mighican governor and a Biden Campaign official, claiming that sources close to the conversation told it that she doesn’t want to be seen as a replacement for Biden and that Biden, because of how badly he did in the debate, can’t win her state. Fox News Digital reported:
The news arose from a call between Whitmer and Biden campaign Chair Jennifer O’Malley Dillon. Sources familiar with the call told the outlet that Whitmer expressed frustration that her name was being raised as a replacement for Biden in the wake of the debate.
She disavowed any effort to force Biden to drop out of the race, something a growing number of Democrats are pushing for. Another source told Politico that she gave Dillon a general warning that Michigan was no longer winnable for Biden following his debate performance.
In saying that President Biden shouldn’t drop out even after the terribly bad debate, Gov. Whitmer joined other high-profile Democrats. Among those who made a similar argument was former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who defended Biden’s cognitive state and attacked Trump’s during an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash.
She said, when Bash asked her if Biden needs to step aside before it is too late in 2024, that Biden can still reverse the bad impression that he has so far made and win the race. Saying as much, she claimed, “My people are very much Biden-Kamala Harris and this is an opportunity for Joe Biden to go out there and show he has the stamina.”
Continuing, she argued, “And by the way, while the press and for some reason they don‘t – there are health care professionals who think that Trump has dementia, that his connection, his thoughts do not go together. Not only that he just lies, he doesn‘t even know the truth, so if we‘re just talking about mental acuity, let’s be fair about it.”
She did, however, admit that it was not a good night for President Biden. She said, “We know how attuned he is to the issues, we know how informed he is. I debate with him about the issues, not debate, but discuss it with him. He‘s right there. So, in any case, it was a bad night. Let’s not sugarcoat that. It was a bad night. It was a great presidency. And that’s what the American people have to choose.”
Watch her here:
That wasn’t the only time CNN questioned Biden after the debate. For example, The American Tribune reported on a post-debate CNN panel that expressed grave concerns about the ramifications of Biden’s performance. CNN host John King claimed that powerful Democrats were actively having conversations about having Biden step down from his reelection campaign. King said, “Some of those conversations include should we go to the White House and asked the president step aside? Others are, other the conversations are about should prominent Democrats go public with that call. But because they feel this debate was so terrible, they do say in moments in a debate later, the president got better and got his footing. But then at the end, even his closing statement was a little halting.”
