Red State City Finally Removes Mural Memorializing George Floyd

A mural depicting George Floyd in the red state of Utah was torn down to make room for a new park expansion, leading woke residents to condemn the decision and say that they hoped the mural would “be the change,” with a Salt Lake City Council member attributing the mural’s removal to unsafe conditions in the surrounding area.

For backround, on April 1 2025, a mural was reportedly removed from the wall of a vacant building in Salt Lake City, Utah, with a member of the City Council clarifying that the mural was taken down as part of a redevelopment of a dilapidated block that was being turned into “green space.” Speaking to the press, locals reacted to the mural’s removal with dismay, saying that it was “a place for us to mourn.”

In a statement issued on Instagram, Salt Lake City Councilman Darin Mano said that the building featuring the mural was going to be repurposed and the surrounding area redeveloped, adding, “I recognize that this block has been a sacred place for many in recent years—a place of mourning for families and a powerful call for social justice and police reform.”

Continuing, Mano sai that the city “has been working for over a decade” to redevlop the location where the mural had formerly stood, going on to add that the buildings in the area “were no longer structurally or environmentally vable.” Mano went on to say that the city had the goal of “making it a public asset for the community,” adding, “As we move forward, I am proud to have advocated for three acres of much-needed public green space.”

Reacting to the news of the mural’s removal, a Salt Lake City resident was disappointed, telling NBC News, “It’s for the wrong reason — death at the hands of officers — but it was a place for us to mourn and show respect for the lives lost.” She added, “And now it’s gone. That’s sad.” In addition, another resident said of the mural and the others surrounding it, “This space was designed out of love,” adding, “Everybody in Utah should know a name and a face here and their story.”

Likewise, another Salt Lake City resident said that the mural of Floyd and the others like it represented a “protest wall,” adding, “We hoped that the mural would be the change,” and saying, “To see them come down, [we’re] feeling defeated. Now we’re just hoping the city stays true to their word.”

Moreover, a Salt Lake City spokesperson explained to a local news outlet that the George Floyd mural was torn down along with several others that depicted individuals who were killed by police, saying that the murals were demolished to make room for an expansion of the city’s “Green Loop.” The demolition reportedly was completed in late March 2025.

In addition, in January 2025, a similar mural depicting George Floyd was reportedly removed from the side of a building in Santa Barbara, California, after it was repeatedly vandalized. In response, Santa Babara City Councilman Oscar Gutierrez said, “The mural being painted over is disappointing, but I understand the difficult position that the artist and property owners were in.” He added, “It breaks my heart to know that there are members of our community that are so full of hate that they are willing to deface an expression of empathy and tolerance.”
