In a bombshell interview, Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich argued that his party needs to toughen up in response to the Democrats’ opposition to President Donald Trump, calling out blue media outlets for their false portrayals of the president’s approval rating.
For context, in an interview with Sean Hannity on May 2, 2025, Gingrich pushed back on recently released poll from CBS that portrayed President Trump’s approval rating as dropping from 53% to 45% between February and April, along with a late April ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll that presented Trump’s approval rating as only 39%.
In response, Gingrich was extremely critical of the mainstream media, saying,” They’re just plain lying, and I think we’ve got to be tougher and clearer about how dishonest these people are.” He added, “The fact is, I talked to John McLaughlin, and I talked to Matt Towery about this. They [the media] have some polls there that are like 27% Republican when Trump got 50% of the vote, so if you add the 23 points they didn’t test, then suddenly he’s in great shape.”
Furthermore, Gingrich argued that the dishonest portrayal of Trump’s approval rating was “deliberate” and “willful,” adding, “Look, there are three great centers of resistance: the propaganda media that will lie all the time, the fake district judges, and the fake Congressional Budget Office. Those are the last three great centers of resistance, and they’re going to do anything they can to defeat Trump and the Republicans, including lying about virtually everything.”
On a similar note, in a segment of “The Ingraham Angle” aired on April 28, 2025, conservative pollster Matt Towery had similar critiques of mainstream media outlets’ presented approval ratings for the president, telling Laura Ingraham and Ari Fleischer that he doesn’t believe the polls are accurate, responding to their results by saying, “How can that possibly be correct?”
Towery explained, “So that’s the only one of these other ones — I looked at some of them. They are absolutely. I don’t like to criticize polling, but how can you have a poll, as John McLaughlin, a good friend of mine, pointed out, how could you have a poll that shows Donald Trump at 39%?”
Continuing, Towery used recent polling data to fact-check the approval rating presented by the newer poll released on April 27, 2025. He told Ingraham, “Now, last time I checked, Donald Trump got almost 50% of the vote. So, how in the world can that poll be correct? There’s no possible way.”

Concluding his statement, Towery argued that while President Trump’s approval rating has “had a little bit of slippage,” it is not “in free fall” as the polls suggest. Towery explained, “He’s breaking a lot of eggs to make an omelet, but he is not dropping in any significant way. I can guarantee you, and I’m just not paying any attention to this nonsense. They were wrong in the elections in the past, and they’re going to be wrong about his approval rating as well.”
