Notorious RINO Senator John Cornyn of Texas is facing fire over a resurfaced interview that showcases his betrayal of President Trump and belief in the disproven Russia collusion theory — a revelation that could increase the chances of him losing the upcoming race to a true conservative like Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is miles ahead of Cornyn, according to polling from June 2025.
For background, a clip from Sen. John Cornyn’s (R-TX) appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation” in 2017 revealed his troubling stance on the Russiagate hoax, with the senator confirming his belief that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election, a debunked claim that was later proven to be the doing of corrupt Democrats. The senator, who is seeking re-election in 2026, appears to be floundering due to his apparent betrayal of the president.
Speaking on “Face the Nation,” Sen. Cornyn argued that Russia” has long been engaged in trying to undermine confidence in our democracy.” The senator went on to imply that he believed in the Russia collusion theory, saying, “It’s just that…their game has now risen to the point where they actually…had an impact.”
Continuing, Sen. Cornyn said that it could “obviously” be seen that Russia had influenced the 2016 election, adding, “We wouldn’t be talking about this if they didn’t have an impact.” He went on, “And so we better wake up, because this is a warning shot for our next elections, and we better be ready.”
Moreover, the senator argued that trying to contradict the collusion claims “would be like spitting into a raging ocean,” adding that Russia’s influence on U.S. elections is “serious.” He continued, “And I agree that Russians did meddle in our elections, and we better be prepared for the next time. But again, there’s no indication that it had an outcome.”
After the senator’s interview resurfaced on social media in July 2025, conservatives called it a “MASSIVE BETRAYAL,” with one poster, Carlos Turcios, saying, “TEXAS RINO SENATOR JOHN CORNYN was part of the ‘RUSSIAN COLLUSION’ investigation against President Trump.” Turcios continued, “He believes Russia meddled in the 2016 Election and believes they rig elections.”
In response to the troubling clip, conservative commenters also pointed to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton as a worthy opponent for the senator’s seat, with one commenter saying, “@JohnCornynknows that @KenPaxtonTX is going to kick his a– so he is going to go down destructing everything he can. He is a vile creep.” Another commenter chimed in, “He’s a POS. He’ll be gone after 2026. Same goes for Ben Crenshaw.”

Importantly, AG Paxton announced his run for Senate in April 2025, promising to “Support Donald Trump in the areas that he’s focused on in a very significant way.” Moreover, a June 26, 2025, poll revealed that Paxton already has a 19-point lead over Sen. Cornyn. The two are also up against Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX), who Politico described as being projected to come in a “distant third,” according to polling of 806 Republican primary voters.
