“Lazy Quitter”: Swamp Republican Slammed for Putting GOP Majority at Risk with Unexpected Retirement

A Republican lawmaker from Tennessee got slammed by his own party after he announced that he was resigning from Congress to take an unspecified job, which narrowed down the Republicans’ majority and led conservatives to react online with outrage.

For background, on July 4, 2025, Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) announced that he was resigning from his position, adding that he could not share further details about his new role, but that he was doing something “specifically designed to help America compete against the CCP.” However, conservatives expressed their frustration in response to the news, with one X user calling Rep. Green a “lazy quitter.”

In a July 4, 2025, X post announcing his resignation, Rep. Green began by saying that he had a “heavy heart” and was saying “farewell,” adding, “To my constituents across Tennessee’s 7th District—thank you. The trust you put in me is humbling. I will look back fondly on my years of serving as your voice in Washington.”

Moreover, in a video attached to his resignation post, Rep. Green explained that he was stepping down to enter the private sector, saying, “While I cannot give the details here, I will be doing something specifically designed to help America compete against the CCP [Chinese Communist Party], but this time in business.”

Furthermore, in a previous statement, the representative said that he was going to resign “as soon as the House votes once again on the reconciliation package,” better known as the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” He added, “It was the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of Tennessee in Congress.”

In addition, Rep. Green said that he had intended to retire “at the end of the previous Congress” but had stayed “to ensure that President Trump’s border security measures and priorities make it through Congress.” He continued, “By overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package, I have done that. After that, I will retire, and there will be a special election to replace me.”

When the New York Post shared word of the lawmaker’s resignation on X, conservatives were infuriated, with one calling the representative “beyond cowardly and pathetic,” and another asking, “What’s he running from?” Another commenter was even more pointed, saying, “Lazy quitter. Dude made a mint in Congress then bailed on us.”

Importantly, this was not the first time that Rep. Green announced his resignation. In February 2024, he said that he was retiring after completing an investigation of former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, saying, “Today, with the House having passed H.R. 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home.” However, the lawmaker reportedly changed his mind after the announcement, waiting over a year to declare that he was on his way out once again.
