DOJ Goes to Legal War with Infamous Sanctuary City Mayor

The Department of Justice is continuing its relentless march against sanctuary cities, this time by suing not just the City of Boston but a number of organizations and individuals connected to it, stating that they have broken the law by trying to block the federal government’s enforcement of immigration law.

As background, the slew of lawsuits against sanctuary cities and city officials has taken place in the wake of AG Bondi, Tom Homan, and others within the administration warning various sanctuary jurisdictions that they could either back down or face the legal and funding consequences.

While some sanctuary jurisdictions have backed down in the face of suddenly severe DOJ hostility, such as the city of Louisville, Kentucky, the majority have remained intransigent in the face of the DOJ’s hostility. Amongst those that has refused to back down is Boston, the mayor of which is infamous for her leftism.

So, launching a legal assault on her and the various other parts of the Boston governmental apparatus for its intransigence, the DOJ said, “Today, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the City of Boston, Massachusetts, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and the Boston Police Department and Police Commissioner over Boston’s sanctuary city laws that interfere with the federal government’s enforcement of its immigration laws.”

Continuing, the DOJ press release on the situation in Boston noted that the refusal of the sanctuary city to abide by US law means that various sorts of violent criminals who shouldn’t even be in the country have spilled out on the streets and committed heinous crimes against Americans.

It said, on that point, “Not only are Boston’s sanctuary city policies illegal under federal law, but, as alleged in the complaint, Boston’s refusal to cooperate with federal immigration authorities results in the release of dangerous criminals from police custody who would otherwise be subject to removal, including illegal aliens convicted of aggravated assault, burglary, and drug and human trafficking, onto the streets.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi, putting the current legal attack against Mayor Wu and the rest of the apparatus in context, noted, “The City of Boston and its Mayor have been among the worst sanctuary offenders in America – they explicitly enforce policies designed to undermine law enforcement and protect illegal aliens from justice.” Further, AG Bondi noted, “If Boston won’t protect its citizens from illegal alien crime, this Department of Justice will.”

Further, the DOJ statement noted how this lawsuit fits into the grander scheme of AG Bondi’s strategy to deal with the sanctuary cities, stating, “On her first day in office, Attorney General Bondi instructed the Department’s Civil Division to identify state and local laws, policies, and practices that facilitate violations of federal immigration laws or impede lawful federal immigration operations. On Aug. 5, Attorney General Bondi published a list of sanctuary jurisdictions, which included the City of Boston, and vowed to bring litigation to end these policies nationwide.”

Concluding, it noted that the DOJ will not rest and is launching a series of suits against sanctuary cities across the country, saying, “Today’s lawsuit is the latest in a series of lawsuits brought by the Civil Division targeting illegal sanctuary city policies across the country, including in New York, New Jersey, and Los Angeles, California.”
