Conservatives are calling for Democratic Senator Adam Schiff to resign after an investigation of his bank records revealed that he had listed a property in Maryland as his primary residence, a form of tax fraud and mortgage fraud that could disqualify him from holding office in California.
For context, on October 16, 2024, two whistleblowers filed a complaint with the U.S. House Ethics, Oversight, & Judiciary Committees accusing Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) of committing both mortgage fraud and tax fraud based on bank records and voter registration records that showed that the senator had listed a property in Maryland as his primary residence after he sold his home in California in 2003.
The complaint against Sen. Schiff, which was filed by whistleblowers Christine Bish and Darren Ellis, pointed out that based on his records, Sen. Schiff sold his home in Burbank, California, in 2003, going on to purchase a home in Maryland, which he listed as his primary residence, which the whistleblowers pointed out potentially disqualifier the senator from holding office in the state of California.
Furthermore, the complaint explained that the senator had “filed and reaffirmed through refinancing documents” that his primary residence was a property in Maryland, “despite claiming to live and represent the people in the state of California, filed and reaffirmed through refinancing documents.” The complaint also pointed out that Sen. Schiff claimed he had made a “mistake” when listing his Maryland home as his primary residence.
Finally, the complaint accused Sen. Schiff of disqualifying himself from holding public office, noting that while he was serving as a state representative, he was in violation of the U.S. House of Representatives rules, which state, “No person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained the Age of twenty-five Years, and been seven years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen.”
In response to the accusations against Sen. Schiff, conservative influencer Chicago Ray expressed his shock on X, writing, “Records show Adam Schiff claimed both of his homes in (CA) & (MD) as his principal residence.” He added, “That’s mortgage fraud, and that’s a crime. Adam Schiff is not protected by Biden’s pardon since it was more than 14 years ago.” He concluded, “Who wants to see Schiff charged?”
Responding to the scandal, Alan Van Zee, a real estate agent in Hawaii, further explained Sen. Schiff’s wrongdoing, writing, “Schiff must claim a California property as his primary residence to fulfill his residency requirement, otherwise he is disqualified to represent his state in DC.”

Continuing, Van Zee added that Sen. Schiff “can’t have it both ways,” saying, “He can’t claim both places as his primary residence. Either he lives in Maryland, and can’t fulfill his California residency requirement, or he claims the Burbank condo as his primary residence, but can no longer benefit financially by claiming the Maryland home as his primary residence.”
