President Trump dropped a bomb on Truth Social by calling for the Washington Commanders NFL team, which he referred to as the Washington “Whatevers,” to change their name back to the Washington Redskins, after the team’s previous name was labeled as politically incorrect by the left back in 2020.
For background, in a July 20, 2025, post on Truth Social, President Trump said that the Washington “Whatevers” should “IMMEDIATELY” change their name back to the Washington Redskins. Moreover, the president asserted that “our great Indian people” are also calling for the name change to occur, adding that the United States is a country of “passion and common sense.”
Writing on Truth Social, the president said, “The Washington ‘Whatevers’ should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins football team.” He added, “There is a big clamoring for this.” Moreover, the president made the case that the Cleveland Guardians, formerly called the Indians, which he described as having a “storied past,” should do “likewise.”
Continuing, President Trump wrote that “massive numbers” of “our great Indian people” support reverting the infamous name change. He added, “Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them.” The president concluded his post by saying, “Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!”
Importantly, President Trump previously said that the teams’ name changes were “degrading to the Indian population,” adding, “and it’s a great population, and they like when they’re called by various names.” Continuing, the president said, “I can tell you that I spoke to people of Indian heritage who love that name and love that team, and I think it’s a much superior name to what they have right now and it had heritage behind it, it had something special.”
Moreover, the president questioned the rationale behind the name changes, saying, “They changed the name of the Cleveland Indians. Why would you take the name ‘Indians’ off the Cleveland Indians?” He continued, “And now it’s called the Cleveland something else. So it just doesn’t make sense to me.”
Previously, President Trump also supported the people of Massapequa, Long Island, who pushed back against the mandated removal of Massapequa High School’s logo and team name, the Chiefs. The president wrote on April 21, 2025, “Forcing them to change the name, after all of these years, is ridiculous and, in actuality, an affront to our great Indian population.”

Furthermore, the president asked, “What could be wrong with using the name, ‘Chief?” in response to the controversy. He called on his “highly capable Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon,” to advocate for the people of Massapequa, adding, “LONG LIVE THE MASSAPEQUA CHIEFS!”
