A United States Border Patrol Agent was recently shot and killed during a traffic stop in Vermont near the northern border with Canada. The Department of Homeland Security reported that the agent was fatally wounded during the incident that occurred in Coventry, Vermont, which sits near the U.S.-Canada border last Monday afternoon.
Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Benjamine Huffman released a statement explaining the tragic killing. “Today, January 20, a Border Patrol agent assigned to the US Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector was fatally shot in the line of duty. Every single day, our Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure,” Huffman said.
The secretary extended his thoughts and prayers to the unidentified agent’s friends and family. “My prayers and deepest condolences are with our Department, the Agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues. This incident is being swiftly investigated, and DHS will release additional information as soon as it becomes available,” he added.
According to reports, two suspects were in the vehicle when the border patrol agent initiated the traffic stop, one of which has been confirmed dead by officials. A spokesperson on behalf of FBI Albany stated that the border patrol agent and another individual were killed while a third individual was injured and brought into custody.
“FBI personnel will be working with our partners from U.S. Border Patrol and Vermont State Police to gather evidence and process the scene,” a statement from the FBI explained . “While there is no threat to the public, Interstate 91 will remain closed due to investigative activity.” The Border Patrol Union released a statement that read, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and coworkers of our fallen brother in green in Vermont.”
The American Tribune reported on other news surrounding the border, where Trump administration border czar Tom Homan highlighted the “huge national security issue” been presented by former President Joe Biden’s lack of border security. Homan has maintained that he will uphold United States law and defend domestic security.
“President Trump has been clear, as I’ve been clear from day one, the president is going to concentrate on public safety threats and national security threats. And have you heard from your previous segments, we have a huge national security issue in this country,” Homan said. “The Southwest border has become the biggest national security vulnerability we’ve seen in this nation. FBI Director Wray agrees with me. We know there’s people in this country who oppose the national security threat.”

Highlighting the shocking number of known gotaways who entered the country completely unvetted by authorities, Homan added, “They’ve arrested a record number of people on terrorist watch lists, a 3500% increase in people on the terrorist watch list being arrested at the border. We got over 2 million known gotaways. We know 2 million people crossed the border, weren’t arrested, weren’t vetted, weren’t fingerprinted.” Watch Homan’s commentary during an interview with Margaret Brennan below:
