The Screen Actors Guild presented their annual awards to a record-low number of viewers, and those that did ineffably watch spoiled narcissists celebrate themselves made sure to find some reason to get outraged.
While the show has most become known as the evening in which Best Actress award winner Jessica Chastain tripped going up the stairs, the incessantly ravenous woke mob is zeroing in on Mark Wahlberg’s presentation of an award to the predominantly Asian cast of Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Critics point to the 1988 violent attack by Wahlberg of two Vietnamese men. The Los Angeles Times described the brutal assault during its coverage of his 2014 request to be pardoned for the crime. The Times wrote:
The father of four has said he was trying to steal beer when he punched Johnny Trinh in the eye after first hitting another Vietnamese man in the head with a large stick and hurling racial slurs. Wahlberg spent 45 days of a two-year sentence in prison for the felony.
Some tweets expressing their outrage made the rounds on Elon Musk’s Twitter.
“Friendly reminder that Mark Wahlberg violently attacked two Vietnamese men and I think it is quite obtuse that he was the one to announce Everything Everywhere All At Once as the winner of the SAG award tonight,” one user wrote.
“They really had mark wahlberg whom got arrested for beating up a Vietnamese man a long time ago present best ensemble to an film with a lot of Chinese American actors in it,” said another.
“I gotta say, having Mark Wahlberg, who literally went to jail as a teen for committing a hate crime against a Vietnamese man, present an award to the cast of Everything Everywhere All At Once was certainly a choice,” commented a third.
Obviously, there is no denying or condoning the violence at the hands of Wahlberg. He did what he did and paid a price, right or wrong, for those actions. The two men he attacked will forever live with that awful memory and the repercussions of the episode.
In 2014, Wahlberg petitioned for a pardon. He ultimately withdrew the request for a pardon.
“I am deeply sorry for the actions that I took on the night of April 8, 1988, as well as for any lasting damage that I may have caused the victims. Since that time, I have dedicated myself to becoming a better person and citizen so that I can be a role model to my children and others,” he said.
Each reader will decide for him or herself the correct response to Wahlberg’s hosting. Is it possible to forgive and move on, or were his offenses serious enough as to warrant a reconsideration? Is this just an effort to cancel an openly Christian white male and promote more of that wonderful tolerance they keep telling everyone about?
Optics are a thing, so perhaps there is some validity to the argument. At the same time, can Wahlberg never associate with Asians again?
With the left, there is no such thing as authenticity, so regardless of the actual right or wrong approach, everyone can be certain that they don’t actually care. Do they care that Pennsylvania’s Senator held black men at gunpoint a few years ago? If they had selected a black presenter for the award, would they have cared about the astronomical violent crime rates against Asians at the hands of the black community?
It seems unlikely in both cases.
As for viewership of the dreadful awards ceremony, which were so pointless and forgetful that the only thing people are talking about is a actress falling and the fake outrage over a white host, there is no way to disguise how awful they were.
NBC Right Now revealed that the number of concurrent viewers on the streams didn’t come close to the number of viewers who tuned in during the 2021 and 2022 broadcasts:
For example, during the SAG Awards live stream, YouTube averaged around 230,000-250,000 concurrent viewers across both feeds. However, in 2022, the show had 1.8 million total viewers on average for the simulcast on TBS and TNT. In 2021, the SAG Awards averaged 957,000 total viewers on TNT/TBS
