In what could be a major victory for conservative Republicans, Pennsylvania Democratic Representative Dwight Evans announced that he will not be seeking re-election to the House in 2026 after holding public office for over four decades, setting the Democrats up for a scramble to find a candidate for the upcoming primary election.
For background, on June 30, 2025, Rep. Dwight Evans (D-PA) confirmed that he would serve the full term of Congress ending on January 3, 2027, but would not be seeking re-election in the 2026 midterms. Rep. Evans’ colleagues told reporters that the lawmaker’s 2024 stroke may have factored into his decision to retire from office in the swing state of Pennsylvania.
In his official announcement published on June 30, Rep. Evans said, “Serving the people of Philadelphia has been the honor of my life,” going on to add, “And I remain in good health and fully capable of continuing to serve.” However, the politician explained, “After some discussions this weekend and thoughtful reflection, I have decided that the time is right to announce that I will not be seeking re-election in 2026.”
Continuing, the Democrat said that he “will serve out the full term that ends Jan. 3, 2027,” adding, “I am deeply proud of what I have been able to accomplish over my 45 years in elected office — from revitalizing neighborhoods block by block to fighting for justice, economic opportunity, investments in infrastructure and education.”
Concluding his statement, Rep. Evans said that he “cannot express the gratitude that I have for the trust that voters put in me as their voice in both state and federal office.” He added, “It has been a privilege of a lifetime to serve as their advocate in government.”
Speaking to WHYY’s Tom MacDonald, Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair Bob Brady said that by retiring, Rep. Evans was “doing the right thing,” adding, “His health is more important than anything else, and this way he doesn’t have to worry about going back and forth, he can stay home and relax a little bit.”
In addition, an anonymous Philadelphia Democrat called the race to replace Rep. Evans in the 2026 midterms “completely wide open,” adding, “There is not one person I can see who I would deem the front-runner.” Moreover, Politico reported that the lawmaker’s retirement could spell the beginning of a “fierce battle” between more traditional Democrats and more progressive candidates running on a platform of Democratic socialism.

On the other hand, the Philadelphia Republican Party head, Vince Fenerty, confirmed to reporters that the GOP will actively seek out a candidate who can run against the Democrats’ nominee to replace Rep. Evans. However, the Democrats have a massive voter registration advantage over the Republicans in the state, leaving the GOP with a tough road ahead.
