Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is the subject of a new investigation by the conservative legal group America First Legal over his alleged ties to the People’s Republic of China. According to the organization, Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate has maintained an “extensive, multi-decade entanglement” with the communist nation.
The move follows efforts from House Oversight Committee Chair Rep. James Comer (R-KY), who launched an investigation into the alleged ties between Walz and the Chinese government. According to the Republican congressman, Walz had made visits to China at least 30 times and led Travel Adventures Inc., a business that coordinated trips to China for young Americans. Furthermore, as a congressman, Walz was a fellow at the Macau Polytechnic University, a Chinese organization that claims to have a “long-held devotion to and love for the motherland.”
American First Legal claimed, “It appears Minnesota’s institutions of higher education welcomed and collaborated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) front organizations known as Confucius Institutes during Gov. Walz’s tenure.” A press release from the conservative legal group added, “The “Confucius Institutes” are a key aspect of the Chinese Communist Party’s “soft power” influence operations in the United States.”
AFL further claimed that the Confucius Institute had an influence in Minnesota, where the Chinese institution was hosted by the University of Minnesota and St. Cloud State University under Walz’s leadership. Former President Donald Trump’s administration and Congress previously ordered academic institutions to end their relationships with the Confucius Institute.
American First Legal Senior Vice President Reed D. Rubinstein said, “The Trump Administration and its bipartisan partners in the Congress had no illusions about the Chinese Communist Party’s nature and intentions. Accordingly, they took strong action to expose and terminate the CCP’s influence operations in the United States, including its many Confucius Centers around the country, and to protect our research enterprise.”
Reed further pointed out that Walz took a very different approach than former president Donald Trump, stating, “By contrast, Gov. Walz’s long and troubling history of sympathetic engagement with the Chinese Communist Party and its instrumentalities suggests, at best, a blind disregard for our national security. The truth about Gov. Walz must be exposed.”
The American Tribune recently reported on the House Oversight Committee probe into Walz’s ties to the CCP. The committee took to X, where it announced the probe into Walz. “Chairman James Comer has launched an investigation into Minnesota Governor Timothy Walz, Kamala Harris’s recently announced vice-presidential running mate, following reports detailing the Governor’s longstanding connections to Chinese Communist Party entities and officials,” the message read.
“Mr. Walz has visited China 30 times, served as a fellow at a Chinese institution that maintains a devotion to the CCP, and spoke alongside the President of a Chinese organization the State Department exposed as a CCP effort to influence and co-opt local leaders,” it continued. “FBI briefers recently informed the Committee that the Bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force investigates CCP activity that is similar to China’s engagement with Governor Walz.”
