Eddie Murphy is tired of cancel culture and isn’t afraid to let his fans know about it. He’s also not going to allow the woke crazies, who take part in this outrage culture, to change the way that his comedy content is made.
In 2019, nearly three years ago to the day, Murphy was quoted by Cinema Blend as he explained that no amount of outrage or nasty Tweets will stop him from producing content that he knows is hilarious and worthy of being seen by his fans.
“I think if you watch Dolemite, it’s pretty clear that I’m not tiptoeing around anything. I’m doing what I’ve always done and I don’t even think about the time period we’re in, and how thin people’s skins have gotten or anything like that. I’m the same guy I’ve always been, and I’m just always going to be that guy, always doing just what I do. I won’t think, is someone going to get offended by me doing an Asian character? I just did the new Coming to America movie, and I did an old Jewish man. I wasn’t like, will Jewish people be offended? No. I’ve done it before and it’s funny. I tend to have only constructive thoughts when I try to do something creative. How do I make it the best that it can be? How can we have the most fun doing it? That’s as far as my thought process goes. Not who might be offended and who’ll get bent out of shape. Because at the core of what I’m doing, I’m not trying to malicious, so I think it’s not going to come off that way.”
That’s a mindset that I wish every single comedian had. Who cares if it’s politically correct? Comedians are not politicians, they are meant to say the funniest thing that they can come up with. I’m sure that this mindset is a large part of what has made Murphy so successful over his illustrious career.
Adherence to the woke agenda can spell disaster for a comedian, even though some seem to think that being PC is the only way to crack jokes. Jimmy Kimmel spoke a couple of months ago about his belief that he lost roughly half of his late-night audience due to the comedian’s constant anti-Trump jokes during his routines.
More notably, Dave Chappelle has been a part of the longstanding war against wokeism, after Netflix employees tried to go on strike after the release of his comedy special which included jokes about trans people, one of the left’s most protected classes. Even as recently as last month, his guest appearance on SNL sent shockwaves through the writer’s room as many decided they could not work with the non-conforming comedian.
Dave Chappelle and Eddie Murphy’s comedic dominance contrasts against Jimmy Kimmel’s depleting viewership comes together to show that woke nonsense is not well received by many fans, that that adherence to those dogmas is not at all necessary for a successful, and legendary, comedic career.
