Footage has recently resurfaced showing then-Senator Kamala Harris, who criticized Americans for saying “Merry Christmas” until there was permanent status for some illegal immigrants. The context of the video surrounds a Trump-era battle over protections for some illegal immigrants who entered the United States as minors.
During a 2017 press conference, Kamala Harris voiced her support for the Dream Act, which sought to establish a pathway to citizenship for some migrants who entered the country illegally as children. Harris argued that we should not celebrate Christmas, knowing that some of these individuals could lose their status and be deported.
“And only when they cleared that vet did we give them DACA status, and now we’re talking about taking it away,” Harris claimed. “It is morally wrong. And when we all sing happy tunes and sing Merry Christmas and wish each other Merry Christmas. These children are not going to have a Merry Christmas. How dare we speak Merry Christmas.”
While further shaming Americans for saying “Merry Christmas,” she began citing statistics on who is supposedly losing their DACA status. “How dare we they will not have a Merry Christmas. They don’t know if they will be here in a matter of days, weeks and months since September 5, over 12,000 have lost their status. Each day, and 122, lose their status. Each week, 851, lose their status. Each day matters,” she continued.
Amid Harris’s presidential bid, conservatives have criticized Harris on the southern border, calling out the record under the Biden-Harris administration and focusing on her statements before stepping into the White House. Former President Donald Trump recently called out Harris for the millions of illegal immigrants who have poured over the southern border.
“Kamala Harris was appointed border czar, as you know, in March 2021, and since that time, millions and millions of illegal aliens have invaded our country, and countless Americans have been killed by migrant crime because of her willful demolition of American borders and laws,” Trump said during a recent press conference.
However, Harris’ campaign addressed the conservative talking points about the border, shifting the conversation to Trump. Campaign officials on behalf of Harris touted liberal rhetoric that Trump is “xenophobic” and intends to take “mothers from their children.” While accusing the former president of lying, a spokesperson claimed that Trump’s intentions aren’t actually about securing the southern border but rather about his own ambitions.
Watch the clip of Harris talking about DACA below:
“The only ‘plan’ Donald Trump has to secure our border is ripping mothers from their children and a few xenophobic placards at the Republican National Convention. He tanked the toughest bipartisan border security deal in a generation because, for Donald Trump, this has never been about actually securing the border — it’s always about himself. He can make up whatever lies he wants, but the fact is there’s only one candidate in this race who will fight for real solutions to help secure our nation’s border, and that’s Vice President Harris,” Harris campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said.
