At a recent rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, last weekend, black Trump supporters voiced their support for former President Donald Trump while expressing their frustration with the Democratic Party, which has allegedly taken the black vote “for granted.” The voters maintained that Trump “is for everybody” while emphasizing their “morals and values” over race.
Since the last election, polling suggests that Trump has seen a substantial increase in support among minority voters, particularly in the black community. Reports indicate that in 2020, Biden commanded 87 percent of the black vote while Trump had just 12 percent. However, a recent CBS News YouGov poll showed that Biden’s support among black voters has fallen to 75 percent while Trump’s has roughly doubled to 24 percent.
One man named Anthony from Kalamazoo, Michigan, explained to Fox News that Democrats “take us for granted,” as the party has historically enjoyed unwavering support from the black community election after election. “When we speak, they don’t listen,” he added.
Another black voter named Jermaine from Detroit said, “Not all of us think of ourselves in relation to our skin color.” He continued, “This is really about values and morals and how you see the world.” Other members of the black community at the rally voiced their disdain for the left’s seeming obsession with identity politics, basing rhetoric on factors such as race.
A man named Henry stressed, “No person is special because of their race.” He further emphasized that he just wants to be treated as a normal member of society and not be catered to because of his race. “You don’t have to treat us like we’re a brand-new creature, OK? Trying to make me think that I deserve more than somebody else, I’ve been mistreated more than others. No. We’re just normal people.”
Another voter named Austin stressed that everyone, regardless of race, wants to succeed and have a piece of the American dream. “It doesn’t matter how they look. It doesn’t matter where they come from. Everybody wants to succeed,” he said. “They want a chance at that American future … and if the conservative movement shows them that that’s where they’re going to find that success, then guess where they’re going to go?”
A common sentiment that was shared with the outlet is that the Democratic Party has lost touch with the black community. “The black vote has long stood with the Democratic Party… and I feel like they have taken that for granted and they haven’t done much with it,” he told the Fox reporter. “We can’t be bought with socialist agendas. We are smart, and we’re able,” one person said.
Another man lamented that Democrats “don’t come to the hood and see what’s going on” in those communities. A voter named Chris complained that Democrats “think that we’re all broke” and that “they think that we need handouts. And it’s just not like that. We’re hardworking people,” he said. “They don’t have black voters if they don’t have any broke black voters.” He maintained that Trump’s platform is not exclusive but is open to all of America. “Trump is for everybody,” Chris added.
