Hot on the heels of his attempt to make Kamala look like a cool personality rather than a somewhat socially awkward vice president who did little with her position and is somewhat less than charming, CNN contributor Van Jones, a former Obama Administration official, argued during the Tuesday, July 23 broadcast of CNN’s “Situation Room” that voters will crawl through broken glass to vote for Kamala and against the GOP.
As background, on Sunday, July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he would be dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee. In a tweet on the matter, he said, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
He also, in that same statement, chimed in with support for VP Harris as the 2024 candidate, saying, “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
In any case, Van Jones, attempting to support VP Harris, suggested that the criticisms of her are rooted in racism and sexism. Van Jones said, “Here’s reality the Republican Party is going to have to resist its worst impulses to make this a racial, gender trash truck of insult and innuendo against this candidate. I don’t want to hear it.”
Continuing, he said, “She checked a box by winning at the local level. I voted for her the local level in San Francisco when she was my district attorney, voted for her when she was attorney general in California voted for her as a senator, I voted for her as vice president. What more boxes can you check that? The only people who’ve been given her special treatment are voters who keep electing her.”
He then, on that same note, said, “There’s a smart way and a dumb way to do anything. It’s a very dumb way to, after 400 years of this mistreatment of black people and black women, to say, ‘You’re incompetent.’ Maybe that makes sense to you in your world and you wouldn’t take it that personally, but that has been the slur, that has been the core, that we are not worthy, we are not as smart, we are not as good, we can’t do stuff.”
Then, connecting that lengthy diatribe about racism to his support for VP Harris and criticism of her, Van Jones said, “And so when you have someone who’s overcome all of that again and again and again and again, and that’s the word you pick? Incompetent? I’m just gonna tell you, it’s not gonna work as well for you as you think it is.”
Concluding, he claimed that voters will go to any length to attack Republicans ad vote against them if they attack Kamala on that basis, saying, “People are going to crawl through broken glass to vote against the party who says that about a black woman. Pick another word. Don’t pick that one.”
