Harry Enten, a senior data reporter for CNN, admitted during a Wednesday, July 24 broadcast that young voters are relatively uninterested in far-left Biden replacement Kamala Harris, with memes online claiming that she has support from that demographic being inaccurate and hiding that she is struggling mightily to gain traction with young voters.
As background, on Sunday, July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he would be dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s nominee. In a tweet on the matter, he said, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together.”
Enten, in any case, referenced recent exit poll from CNN to show that President Joe Biden, despite his age, had managed to win over young voters, or voters under the age of 35, by a whopping 21 points in the 2020 election, but Vice President Kamala Harris is doing far, far worse with that demographic. According to Enten. she’s only up by a “significantly less”9 points as of Sunday.
Continuing, Enten questioned whether Kamala has even that level of support from young voters, particularly now that President Biden has dropped out of the race and she is actually the nominee for whom they would have to vote. “If this is unique support among young voters, I would like to know what her non-unique support is. Is it even worse than this?” Enten said.
Enten also noted that a whopping 55% of Democrats said that they are not more motivated to vote with Kamala, whereas just 39% of Democrats said they would be more motivated to vote. That was slightly better for Kamala with young voters. Amongst Democrats between the ages of 18 and 29, 42% said they were more likely to vote, and 49% said they are not.
Commenting on that aspect of things, Enten added Kamala doesn’t really seem to have much support from young voters, whatever the memes about her say. “This idea, again, that the vice president has unique potential to dig in and get young voters to turn out—John, it’s just not there in the numbers despite all the internet memes that are going around,” he said.
“Yes, Democrats can make this switcheroo, but they’re still going to have to beat Donald Trump, a Donald Trump who is stronger, Sara, than he has ever been before,” he added, noting that former President Trump is doing better than before with American voters, so Kamala’s lackluster levels of support are even worse news for Democrats.
On that same note, Trump’s popularity amongst voters being far higher than it has been in the past, Enten said, “We know that Donald Trump has historically been unpopular, but take a look now. After the Republican National Convention, in the ABC News/Ipsos poll, he recorded his highest ever favorable rating at 40%. That’s not a one-off.”
