Speaking in a speech and prayer before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on the night of Thursday, July 18, Reverend and Christian evangelist Franklin Graham spoke about former President Donald Trump and the assassination attempt on him at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, over the preceding weekend.
Speaking about the shocking experience that almost resulted in a shot to the head that would have killed the former president, Rev. Graham said that God spared Trump. He said, before giving his prayer, “Last Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Trump had a near death experience — no question. But God spared his life.”
Continuing, he noted how such horrifying experiences can cause people to change their lives and priorities, as the closeness to death causes a re-evaluation of what is important. He said, “And when we go through those experiences, it changes us. It can cause us to examine our lives and to reevaluate our priorities, as you should.”
Graham also noted how Trump showed America and the world what it means to have unshakeable, unmovable faith in destiny and a will to fight for the nation and making it better. He said, on that point, “When President Trump rose from that platform, he rose with his fist raised in strength, showing America his unshakable resolve to fight with them in the nation.”
Continuing, he added that he can’t speak for God and why he would let someone else die, but that he knows God loves us all, saying, “I cannot explain why God would save one life and allow another one to be taken. I don’t have an answer for that. But one thing I do know is that God loves us and he wants us to be with him in heaven one day — and that’s through faith in his Son Jesus Christ.”
Speaking about Trump’s role in filling the court and even UN with people who advocate for religious liberty, Rev. Graham said, “Things that he said he’ll do, he did. When he told me and our country in 2016 that he was going to appoint conservative justices, guess what? He did. In 2016, he said he would defend religious liberty. And guess what? He did. In 2019, I was with him at the United Nations when the first president of history of this country stood there to advocate for religious liberty worldwide.”
On much the same note, Rev. Graham noted how Trump stared down the Turks and forced them to relsea an American pastor, saying, “When American citizen and Pastor Andrew Brunson was being held in a Turkish jail on false accusations, President Trump demanded that he be released and he applied economic pressure and sanctions until they did that.”
And, concluding his speech with a comment about how he is grateful for what God has done through former President Trump, he said, “I’m grateful and thankful for what he did as a 45th president of United States, and I know that as the 47th president, he will keep his word to the American people to make America great once again.”
