Speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, July 17, Ohio Senator and Trump Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance, author of Hillbilly Elegy, spoke out about how the American political establishment had left behind and pillaged his hometown, calling out now-President Joe Biden as being one of those responsible for the tragic matter.
That came when Sen. Vance was speaking about the situation in the heartland generally, with left-behind towns falling apart as globalization took away the good jobs and opioids destroyed the populace. He characterized Biden as the sort of Establishment, “career politician” who spent his time in politics pillaging middle America via endless wars abroad and free trade policies.
Sen. Vance said, speaking about growing up in such a community that was hard-hit by globalism, “I grew up in Middletown, Ohio, a small town where people spoke their minds, built with their hands, and loved their God, family, community, and country with their whole hearts.” He continued, “But it was also a place that had been cast aside and forgotten by America’s ruling class in Washington.”
He then went on the attack against President Biden and accused him of being one of those behind NAFTA, which he said was responsible for American jobs flowing en masse to Mexico. Sen. Vance said, “When I was in the fourth grade, a career politician by the name of Joe Biden supported NAFTA, a bad trade deal that sent countless good American manufacturing jobs to Mexico.”
Continuing, he spoke about how now-President Biden supported, as a senior, a trade deal that Sen. Vance argued also led to jobs leaving for China. He said, “When I was a sophomore in high school, a career politician by the name of Joe Biden gave China a sweetheart trade deal that destroyed even more good middle-class jobs.”
He then spoke about America’s wars abroad, noting that Biden supported the disastrous invasion of Iraq. He said, “And when I was a senior in high school, Joe Biden supported the disastrous invasion of Iraq. And at each step of the way, in small towns, like mine in Ohio or next door in Pennsylvania or in Michigan and other states across our country, jobs were sent overseas, and children were sent to war.”
Then, contrasting Biden’s bad decisions with former President Trump’s attempt to rectify the situation, Sen. Vance said, “Somehow, a real estate developer from New York by the name of Donald Trump was right on all of these issues while Joe Biden was wrong. Donald Trump knew, even then, that we needed leaders who would put America first.”
Watch Vance here:
Trump, describing why he chose Sen. Vance, said,
After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond.”
