Following former President Donald Trump’s highly anticipated selection of Ohio Senator JD Vance to be his running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris weighed in on the news. Harris opined that Vance was chosen to be a “rubber stamp” for Trump’s supposed “extreme agenda” that will be implemented during a second term in the White House.
Harris made the remarks in a video message that was released ahead of Vance’s acceptance speech on Wednesday at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Harris sounded off on Vance, accusing him of “being loyal to Trump” and not the United States. The vice president further criticized Vance for supposedly claiming he would have tried to overturn the 2020 election, opposing abortion, and being tied to Project 2025.
“Hi, everyone. So Donald Trump has picked his new running mate. JD, Vance. Trump looked for someone he knew would be a rubber stamp for his extreme agenda, and make no mistake. JD, Vance will be loyal only to Trump, not to our country. And unlike Mike Pence, Vance said he would have carried out Trump’s plan to overturn the 2020 election. He supports a national abortion ban and voted against protecting IVF. And if elected, he will help implement the extreme project, 2025 plan for a second Trump term, which would target critical programs like Head Start and Medicare. But we are not going to let that happen,” Harris said in the video.
Despite the intense criticism directed toward Vance, reports indicate that the vice president spoke to Trump’s running mate on the phone during a “brief and respectful” phone conversation after he was selected. The American Tribune reported that Vance initially did not pick up Harris’ call, forcing her to leave a voicemail.
ABC News Reporter Rachel Scott reported, “ I just talked to a source who confirms that Vice President Kamala Harris did in fact call Ohio Senator J.D. Vance after Trump revealed that it would be his running mate.” She added, “I’m told that they did not connect, but I’m told that Harris did leave a voicemail. This crowd has been eagerly awaiting JD Vance and they’re already adapting to the news.”
Trump formally posted on Truth Social about his selection of Vance to serve as his running mate. “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” he wrote.
Trump added, “As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Congratulations to Senator J.D. Vance, his wife, Usha, who also graduated from Yale Law School, and their three beautiful children. MAGA2024!” Watch Kamal’s video statement below:
