Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) recently led over two dozen Republicans who condemned the hush money trial against former President Donald Trump, where he was recently convicted on all 34 felony counts. The GOP called out Attorney General Merrick Garland for the “show trial” that was brought against the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
Paul addressed Trump’s conviction in a letter on Wednesday, labeling the outcome of the trial an “evisceration of the American judicial process.” The lawmaker maintained that the incessant desire to prosecute Trump is at odds with the Constitution.
“The conviction of President Trump in Manhattan is nothing short of the evisceration of the American judicial process,” he wrote. “In their zeal to imprison Donald Trump, Democrat prosecutors successfully dissolved the constitutional protections afforded to defendants and the barriers that protect every American from the abuses of arbitrary rule.”
Paul further argued that Judge Merchan, who presided over the case, was conflicted where his contributions to Democrats and liberal causes are well-documented. The Kentucky Republican also pointed out that prosecutors escalated misdemeanor charges to felonies.
“Even if we disregard Judge Juan Merchan’s financial contributions to Democratic candidates and causes, the prosecutors were permitted to convert alleged time-lapsed business records misdemeanors into felonies because the records violations were supposedly in furtherance of a second crime. Yet, even after the jury rendered its verdict, we do not know what constitutes that specific second crime,” Paul continued in the letter.
Moreover, Paul blasted the Biden administration for being “complicit in the destruction of due process of law.” The statement claimed the trial was “the attempt to imprison a leader of the loyal opposition,” while asserting it threatens “the existence of due process of law, without which a constitutional republic dedicated to the protection of individual liberty is not possible.”
Paul and 28 other Senate Republicans signed the letter condemning the hush money trial against Donald Trump. Late last month, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Trump is expected to appeal the case, where his sentencing is scheduled for July 11.
The American Tribune previously reported on post-court comments from Donald Trump, in which he addressed his felony conviction. The former president maintained that he was fighting for the country and the Constitution and he would not back down. Trump stated:
“This was a disgrace. This was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt. It’s a rigged trial, a disgrace. They wouldn’t give us a venue change. We were at 5% or 6% in this district, in this area, this was a rigged, disgraceful trial. The real verdict is going to be November 5, by the people. And they know what happened here, and everybody knows what happened here. You have a Soros-backed DA and the whole thing, we didn’t do a thing wrong. I’m a very innocent man, and it’s okay. I’m fighting for our country. I’m fighting for our Constitution. Our whole country is being rigged right now. This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent, and I think it’s just a disgrace. And we’ll keep fighting. We’ll fight till the end, and we’ll win because our country’s gone to hell. We don’t have the same country anymore. We have a divided mess we’re nation in decline, serious decline. Millions and millions of people pouring into our country right now from prisons and from mental institutions, terrorists and they’re taking over our country. We have a country that’s in big trouble, but this was a rigged decision, right from day one, with a conflicted judge who should have never been allowed to try this case, never, and we will fight for our Constitution. This is long from over. Thank you very much.”
