When Harrison Butker spoke at Benedictine College about how his wife’s decision to be a homemaker significantly helped their family, many critics on the left came out of the woodwork to attack him. But many defenders came out as well, and amongst them was a homeschooling mom from Maryland who said that Butker’s message on the matter was quite correct.
As background, Butker encouraged the women present to see the importance of being a homemaker. Beginning, he said women had been lied to, saying, “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.”
Continuing, he explained how his wife’s decision to be a homemaker rather than a cog in a corporate machine was a highly impactful one, saying, “How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”
Describing how her decision significantly helped their family, he said, “I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
In any case, Dawn Duran, a mother from Maryland who stays at home to homeschool her kids, spoke to Fox News Digital about Butker’s speech and said that his willingness to stand up for what he believes in was extremely encouraging, “The fact that a professional athlete showed the courage and the conviction to speak truth in an age when eyes are blinded and ears are shut against it, was deeply encouraging to me.”
Continuing, Mrs. Duran explained how really it was the backlash to what was just a Catholic message to Catholic message that really astounded her, saying, “What did surprise me is that people were shocked that a traditional Catholic speaking to a Catholic audience believes things that Catholics have proclaimed for thousands of years.”
Then, explaining what his message really was, she said, “I did not hear him declare that every woman must be a stay-at-home wife and mother. Instead, he was merely inspiring women who recognize that as their highest calling to embrace it. He was encouraging them that they didn’t have to buy into society’s depiction of a successful woman.”
Continuing, she explained why people reacted so viscerally to his message, saying, “I think that his great sin was that he dared to say something that is obviously true in public. We live in a world that routinely rejects God, rejects its creation order. And Harrison Butker called our attention to the fact that absolute truth does, in fact, exist, despite our culture’s best efforts to deny it.” She added, “But unfortunately, our culture devalues the family and the work of mothering to the extent that this became the issue that it has become.”
