During his commencement address at Benedictine College, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker spoke out about certain cultural topics, namely how his life was improved by finding a woman who was able to help support him and raise their kids by being a wonderful homemaker, rather than focusing on a career. As could be expected, his speech drew much backlash, particularly from the left. Further, it drew condemnation from the mainstream media, such as from “The Hill,” a news outlet, which mischaracterized what he had to say and was called out for doing so.
For reference, during the speech, Butker encouraged the women present to see the importance of being a homemaker, saying, “For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?”
He continued, “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”
He then said, “I’m on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”
The Hill, tweeting about Butker’s speech, ridiculously claimed, “Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham backed Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker after he gave a controversial college graduation speech, telling women that their rightful place is in the kitchen.”
That quickly got fact-checked by X’s community notes, which said, “Butker did not tell women their place is in the kitchen. He said, ‘[A]ll of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.'” Check that out here:
Chiming in to roast The Hill for its tweet and the article it posted attacking her and Butker was FNC host Laura Ingraham, who also defended Butker in a great segment about what he said and why it is important. Ingraham, quote-tweeting The Hill and roasting the tweet, said, “Where are the quotes? The Hill “reporter” obviously didn’t learn to check transcripts. Of course, Butker said no such thing. He DID praise his wife for raising and educating their kids, but I suppose @thehill wasn’t interested in reading or watching his actual speech. Lazy.”
A commenter chimed in as well, arguing that the MSM outlets are doing everything possible to make themselves look ridiculous. That commenter said, “Wow…they are really falling all over themselves these days to make fools of themselves. What….their optics scams get like 30 minutes…an hour of traction these days?”
Similarly, another argued that those who are mischaracterizing that part of his speech in such a way are being willfully lazy, saying, “Too many people have been willfully lazy and haven’t watched the entire address. It’s only 20 minutes. It’s an excellent address, where he communicates clearly and concisely his traditional Catholic beliefs. Never, ever believe anything corporate media tells you.”
