Recently, Disney announced it was delaying the release of the “Snow White” remake until March 2025. Insiders familiar with the matter claim the delay is related to concerns over the film amounting to a “financial disaster” and hurting future spinoffs.
The individual familiar with the situation claimed the movie’s pushback is related to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which has upended the film industry. Apparently, Disney has invested over $300 million into the remake of “Snow White.”
“Disney had to delay ‘Snow White’ because they have spent so much money on it, and if it is a financial disaster at the box office, it might single-handedly cripple future remakes and potential ‘Snow White’ sequels that they have planned,” the insider told the Daily Mail.
Furthermore, critics have lambasted the upcoming film as being woke based on the comments of lead actress Rachel Zegler. The American Tribune reported on Zegler’s remarks, which sparked significant backlash, drawing controversy to the film.
Zegler implied the original “Snow White” plot was based around a “stalker” prince, claiming, “I mean, you know, the original cartoon came out in 1937 and very evidently so. There’s a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird! Weird. So we didn’t do that this time.”
“They also have to remove themselves from the bad taste in the mouths of online critics and want to instead deliver a great film and get to a point where they get it right,” the insider added. “They realize that they were overthinking things and are now reigning it all in a little bit more,” the source noted. “They just need some time to figure it all out – plus we are still dealing with the strikes. It is a perfect storm right now, but they are embracing change and anticipate it all to work out and exceed expectations. The work starts now.”
The new Disney film has also drawn criticism from actor Peter Dinklage, who slammed the film as being “f***ing backward.” Dinklage, who has a form of Dwarfism known as Achondroplasia, denounced the film for being woke in the sense of casting Zegler, a Latina actress, but continuing to include the seven dwarves in the script, which apparently perpetuates negative stereotypes.
“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White — but you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,’” Dinklage stated on a podcast.
Dinklage sounded off on the film, for its seeming indifference to his cause. “Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there,” he continued. “It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f***ing backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f*** are you doing man?”
Disney responded, “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”
