The NFL’s Washington Commanders have taken a stand against the hypocrisy of D.C. Attorney General Karl A. Racine.
Amid rumors of their potential $7 billion sale, the team is also under investigation by multiple agencies.
Racine has been investigating the team and its controversial owner, Dan Snyder, for a year now and will be hosting an announcement today about the ongoing investigation.
Now, a Commander’s Spokesperson has spoken out about the rise in crime and the AG’s decision to focus on investigating a football team instead of prosecuting violent criminals, as reported by ESPN’s John Keim, who said:
Less than three months ago, a 23-year-old player on our team was shot multiple times, in broad daylight. Despite the out-of-control violent crime in DC, today the Washington Commanders learned for the first time on Twitter that the D.C. Attorney General will be holding a press conference to “make a major announcement” related to the organization tomorrow.
The Commanders have fully cooperated with the AG’s investigation for nearly a year. As recently as Monday, a lawyer for the team met with the AG who did not suggest at that time that he intended to take any action and, in fact, revealed fundamental misunderstandings of the underlying facts. It is unfortunate that, in his final days in office, Mr. Racine appears more interested in making splashy headlines, based on offbeat legal theories, rather than doing the hard work of making the streets safe for our citizens.
These strong words are sent after Rookie running back Brian Robinson was shot two times during an apparent robbery gone wrong.
Robinson has since recovered from the injury and made his debut for the team, but the team is furious that the event took place.
It is understandable that the team is angry, as teammates and coaches alike gave glowing endorsements of the character of the young Robinson.
In what is clearly a highly charged emotional situation, Robinson’s agent voiced that he was unhappy with the remarks of the team spokesperson.
Up until an hour ago, the Commanders handled the Brian Robinson situation with so much care, sincerity and class. And I was so grateful for all of it. Although I know that there are some great humans in that building, whoever is hiding behind this statement is not one of them.
Commander’s president Jason Wright also released a statement, shared by the Washington Post’s writer Sam Fortier, clarifying that the team supports the work of the police department and that the Brian Robinson issue should remain separate from the ongoing investigation into the team.
The lawyers’ legitimate frustrations with the AG should have been separate and apart from referencing the terrible crime that affected our plater.
For the AG’s part, two suspects were arrested in connection with the shooting.
As for AG Racine, his announcement is scheduled for 1 PM Thursday, and the Commanders have likely done themselves no favors in the lead to the press conference.
