Recently, a Democratic county official in Texas announced she is joining the Republican party because of the GOP’s stance on border security. Kleburg County Attorney Kira Talip Sanchez made the decision on Saturday, indicating conservatives align more with her goals.
Justifying her change in political affiliation, Sanchez claims “unprecedented” conditions at the southern border have caused her to abandon the Democratic party. She elaborated that it is her elected duty to promote the well-being of the citizens of Kleberg County, which sits within close proximity to the U.S.’s border with Mexico. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to keep South Texas safe,” Sanchez said.
“As County Attorney, I have been proud to work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of the citizens of Kleberg County,” Sanchez stated. “There is an unprecedented crisis at our southern border. I believe that the GOP’s policies of law and order protecting safety, and backing the blue best align with my values and the values of the citizens of Kleberg County.”
Hispanic Republicans across the state of Texas have been engaging in activism to convert others within their ethnicity to the GOP. They argue that liberal politicians have lost touch with their interests and no longer reflect the values of Hispanic Americans.
“Every day, we are meeting with people who have voted for Democrats for decades but that this is no longer their Abuelos’ Democratic Party,” Cassy Garcia, President of the Hispanic Republicans of Texas, argued. “It’s become too radical, elitist, and out of touch with our values.”
Republicans in southern red states, particularly Texas, have slammed Biden’s federal government for its response, or lack thereof, to the crisis at our border with Mexico. Texas Governor Gregg Abbott even took matters into his own hands by deploying a floating border barrier to deter illegal immigration into the state via the Rio Grande.
Unsurprisingly, Joe Biden’s Department of Justice attacked Texas for daring to defend its southern border amid the current administration’s incompetence. According to a letter from the DOJ, “The State of Texas’s actions violate federal law, raise humanitarian concerns, present serious risks to public safety and the environment, and may interfere with the federal government’s ability to carry out its official duties.”
However, Greg Abbott has refused to bow to the federal government and has remained firm in the success of his initiatives. “Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 394,200 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 31,300 criminal arrests, with more than 29,100 felony charges reported. In the fight against fentanyl, Texas law enforcement has seized over 422 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission,” Abbott said.
In late 2022, conditions along the southern border became so bad that Gov. Abbott even declared it an “invasion.” Abbott stated, “I invoked the Invasion Clauses of the U.S. & Texas Constitutions to fully authorize Texas to take unprecedented measures to defend our state against an invasion.”
According to Abbott’s declaration, the state of Texas would be taking measures to secure the border, including providing significant defensive resources along the southern areas of the Lone Star state. So far, Abbott has deployed National Guard troops, installed various barriers and barbed wire, and utilized the aforementioned contested floating barrier on the Rio Grande.
