Speaking during the questions and answers portion of a recent campaign event of his in Michigan, Senator and 2024 Trump running mate JD Vance sounded off when a reporter asked him a ridiculous question, saying that the reporter should try asking a real question about something of substance rather than just pushing DNC talking points.
During the interaction, Sen. Vance was asked about claims regarding Kamala’s VP choice, with the MSNBC reporter asking, “You have repeatedly suggested that the only reason that Kamala Harris didn’t pick Josh Shapiro to be her running mate is because of his Jewish faith. Do you have any evidence to support that assertion that a person who is married to a Jewish man is somehow antisemitic or bowing to antisemites?”
Responding, Sen. Vance first toasted the question as being ridiculous, saying, “Well, I reject the premise of the question. I did not say that that was the only reason that Kamala Harris didn’t choose Josh Shapiro, so you should take a little less DNC talking points when you ask your questions and ask a real question.”
Continuing, Sen. Vance noted that leftist activists have been anti-Israel and disliked Gov. Shapiro as a VP choice for that reason, saying, “I have suggested that Kamala Harris was motivated, or at least her party, was motivated by antisemitism, and the evidence that I offer for that is what dozens of Democratic activists said in the run-up to her selecting her nominee.”
Emphasizing that point, Sen. Vance noted that he saw there as being a slew of people who said as much, telling the MSNBC reporter, “There were multiple grassroots activists, multiple media personalities, multiple people with influence in the Democratic Party who suggested that she should not choose Josh Shapiro because of his ethnic background.”
He added, “Look, I don’t care what your ethnic background is. I know Donald Trump doesn’t care what your ethnic background is. I do not want to live in a country where we are choosing who the next VP is because of skin color or ethnic heritage. Choose based on merit, and the fact that so many prominent leaders in the far-left felt empowered to talk about Shapiro’s ethnic heritage is a disgrace, and I think it is a scandal for the Democrat Party.”

As background, some on the far-left dislike Shapiro over his ties to and support for Israel, including a volunteer trip to the country he went on in high school and a college essay in which he argued that he saw a two-state solution as being an entirely non-viable idea. As a result, an online campaign against “Genocide Josh” sprung up before Harris chose Walz as her VP instead of Shapiro.
During that same campaign event in Michigan, a reporter asked Sen. Vance, “How can [Kamala] fake her race?” Vance decisively responded, “She fakes who she is depending on the audience that she’s in front of, and that’s who she is, and that’s who she’s always been,” suggesting that Harris is pandering to specific audiences for political gain.
