Speaking during a Monday, August 5 interview on Fox Business’s “The Evening Edit,” famed entrepreneur and investor Kevin O’Leary, known as “Mr. Wonderful” for his often acerbic demeanor, particularly on Shark Tank, sounded off on Vice President Kamala Harris and how the current Democratic ticket could handle an economic downturn.
As background, the Japanese Nikkei index fell dramatically after a Japanese surprise rate hike of 0.25%, dragging down American indexes with them. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) closed down 2.6% Monday, while the S&P 500 index dropped by 3%, and the NASDAQ fell by 3.43%. Adding to the selloff were fears of a recession and a disappointing jobs report that came out on Friday, August 2. It was that information about which O’Leary was speaking.
Beginning, Mr. Wonderful told “The Evening Edit” during his Monday interview that while he hopes and thinks there won’t be a recession, the various policies that are being spoken about are all risks to investors. He said, “Even the most bearish economists right now don’t see more than a 50/50 [recession] chance. So I’m still in the soft landing camp. But, policy is now becoming a risk with investors.”
Continuing, he noted that once the nomination is firmly Kamala’s and her VP is chosen, her honeymoon period will be over and then there will start to be more and more risk for investors, particularly if Kamala moves left or even just doesn’t move toward the center from where she is. He said, “After August 7, when the happy days are over, then there’s risk. And, of course, we need to see [Kamala Harris] move to the center.”
Mr. Wonderful then elaborated on what he meant by “happy days,” saying, “I talked to some people, including those who’ve been advising Harris in the last 14 days, and they don’t see any reason to come and talk to the press yet. They’re still in the happy phase, and they’re killing it in fundraising, and they have the next big happy phase when she picks the vice president.”
Then, further addressing Kamala’s leftism, particularly as shown by her decision to pick far-left Minnesota Governor Walz, he compared her with Canada’s far-left Prime MInister, Justin Trudeau. He said, “Go back up to Canada years ago when Justin Trudeau never gave any policy, never gave any press interviews, and he just kept telling everybody, ‘Don’t worry, it’s sunny ways.’ And he got elected with a landslide. And boy, was that a mistake for Canadians.”
Getting to how Kamala is like Trudeau, O’Leary argued, “They got decimated. Turns out he had no executional skills. Does VP Harris have any executional skills? She has a double-whammy challenge. She’s got to go to the center with policy. Everybody understands, including me and every other investor. And then, she’s got to convince everybody in those seven swing states: I can get the job done.”
Concluding, he said that those who, like Kamala, don’t know how to execute or even what they are doing, are problems that decimate their countries. He said, “Because if you don’t know what you’re doing, because you’ve never executed anything and you don’t know how to do it, like the Trudeau story, you decimate your country.”

This isn’t the first time O’Leary compared Harris to Trudeau. In another recent interview, he said, comparing her to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, that under Trudeau’s watch Canada has hit the rocks and that Harris will wreck America in much the same mold. He said, “There’s an example of an ‘it kid’ up in Canada a few years ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Nobody looked at his background, nobody looked at his policies. He was the ‘it kid.’ That country is on its knees! He wiped it out!”
Continuing after describing Canada under Trudeau, Mr. Wonderful asked if Americans are going to elect someone similarly awful who will also destroy the country with radical leftism, asking, “Are Americans basically going to hire or basically bring a president that’s another Justin Trudeau?” He then added, “I hope not.”
