Senator Chuck Schumer, in a recent speech that went viral, argued that it’s time for Democrats to pass an immigration bill and grant amnesty to all the illegal immigrants that are here, claiming that such a dramatic policy is necessary because Americans aren’t having enough kids.
Chuck Schumer says Democrats want to pass an immigration bill because "we have a population that is not reproducing on its own with the same level that it used to."

As you can hear in the video, Schumer, discussing his amnesty plan, said:
Now more than ever, we’re short of workers. We have a population that is not reproducing it on its own, with the same level that it used to. The only way we’re going to have a great future in America is if we welcome and embrace immigrants, the dreamers and all of them because our ultimate goal is to help the dreamers but get a path to citizenship for all 11 million or however many undocumented there are here.
For reference, the 11 million number given by Schumer is a lowball number that was probably far too low years ago. A 2018 Yale and MIT study found, for example, that there could be as many as 22 million illegal immigrants, not “just” 11 million, here.
And that was back before millions started flowing across under Biden’s watch. So how many illegals would “we” be giving amnesty to under Schumer’s plan? Perhaps as many as 25 million or even 30 million people?
The real number is unknown, but it seems to be much larger than 11 million, if the Yale and MIT study is to be believed.
With a population of somewhere around 330 million people, the high right of illegal immigrants potentially here, 30 million, being given amnesty would mean that suddenly 10 percent of America would be composed of those who were formerly illegal immigrants.
That would significantly alter voting patterns in America, as recent immigrants, particularly those from the “global south”, tend to vote Democrat.
People on Twitter were not happy with what Schumer had to say, as the comments section of the embedded tweet shows (these comments are meant, as always, to reflect what people online are saying, not to be claims about the truth of the matter or to be taken as statements of fact) .
One person ripped the idea that amnesty would fix anything, saying:
Elected officials have created the problems (the costs of mass immigration) that they claim ANOTHER amnesty will fix. Reagan’s amnesty didn’t fix the border then and won’t fix production now! Put Americans First!!!
Another said: “So Democrats create the economic conditions were families have to decide not to have children in America by Chuck Schumer wants to import millions of families from Third World countries at our expense. ”
On the same point, another commenter said: “Pretty good spin but does nothing to address the problem of low birthrates. It simply incentivizes more illegal immigration. 🤦♂️”
Another brought up the sad reasons that many aren’t having kids, saying “Many can’t afford to support themselves, much less a family or buy a house..they wait to have kids till in 30’s or 40’s, then can’t get pregnant.”
Similarly, another said “ah, and which party has been incentivizing women to not marry, providing welfare checks to single mothers, and demonizing masculinity?“
