Yankees legend David Wells spoke out against the woke culture that is ripping apart the sport and baseball team that he loves. Wells was present at the Yankees Old Timers’ Day in 2023 and did not hold back when asked his thoughts about the state of the team and especially about its affiliation with Nike.
Wells started off hot, bashing the crime problems that America currently faces and saying that everyone should be ready to defend themselves at a moment’s notice. “We’re in a different world,” he said. “It sucks. That’s why everyone should carry a gun.”
Wells also spoke out against the woke Nike brand that now makes the Yankee jerseys. After removing the tape that he used to cover the Nike logo on his jersey, he said, “I hate Nike! They’re woke!” He also minced no words in talking about the Bud Light marketing debacle and whether he would ever consume their drink again. “Nope,” he said, putting the question at bay without a second thought.
His interview wasn’t all short answers about culture and politics. When he finally started talking about the current state of the New York Yankees, he had harsh words to say about the lack of toughness and grit that he feels is holding the organization back from the levels of greatness that it had during Wells’ tenure in the Bronx.
He began by explaining where he thinks the blame should be pointed. “It always seems that the (general managers), the managers and all of that are getting fired, and getting blamed for it, and it’s the players’ (fault). If you’re not doing the job out on the field, and if I was a GM, I would start sending a message.”
Wells takes issue with players being left on the Major League roster when their play does not warrant that position. He says that back in his day, when a star player was underperforming or not giving enough effort, they were sent to the minor leagues to figure it out.
Now, Wells says that the Yankees front office is afraid to send players to the minor leagues due to the massive amount of money that the team has invested in its MLB roster. Wells thinks that has led to a lack of accountability and lack of toughness that has spread throughout the locker room.
“Send a message to them and let them go sit down there and think about it. That’s what you have to do. I think now they coddle them too much. They baby them. … It’s up to your peers to make you better,” said Wells. Watch him here:
While he will likely not be accepted by the mainstream media due to his values going against the left’s narrative, plenty of baseball fans fall on the right side of the aisle politically and will appreciate his candid responses to the questions put before him.
