Robbery Foiled, Robber Taught a Lesson after Residents Use His Own Guns Against Him

An Indiana man armed with not just one, but two firearms attempted to rob an occupied apartment, likely hoping the firepower would help him cow and steal from the residents.

Yet that’s not quite what happened. Rather, the apartment residents were able to disarm and disable him, putting a quick stop to the robbery.

That would-be armed robber was Marrell B. Tyler, who is 18 years old. He “allegedly” broke into the Annex of Kokomo Apartments early in the morning at 3:25 a.m. on Thursday the 27th of October.

To disguise his identity he brought along a ski mask that hid his face and, as mentioned above, was carrying two firearms with him for the robbery.

But though those guns might have been used for the robbery at first, things quickly took a turn and they were then used against Marrell; when he broke into the apartment he was trying to rob, it turned out there were three male occupants of the apartment that all fought back against Marrell and took one of his guns,

According to the police, it was only after the apartment residents took one of the guns that Marrell pulled out the second one. Though a bullet was fired during the battle between Marrell and the residents of the apartment, no one was shot. The residents eventually disarmed Marrell.

But just because they didn’t shoot him doesn’t mean they didn’t hurt him; Marrell’s face was seriously rearranged, with the residents beating him up pretty severely during the struggle, teaching him a lesson in civics the hard way. They then eventually gained control of the situation and, using the weapon they took from him, were able to keep him detained until the police arrived.

The local police department, in its Facebook post on the attempted robbery and resulting smackdown, reported that:

On October 27, 2022 at approximately 3:25am, Officers of the Kokomo Police Department responded to an apartment located at 2205 S. Washington St. in reference to a residential entry in progress. Upon Officers arrival, they located three male residents who were holding another male at gunpoint in the apartment. The residents informed Officers that the detained, unknown male had entered their apartment wearing a ski mask and pointing a handgun at them. The residents grabbed the suspect and began struggling with him until the gun was knocked away from the suspects hand. During the struggle, the suspect pulled a second handgun out. As the residents tried to disarm the suspect a second time, the handgun went off but did not strike anyone. One of the residents retrieved his own handgun and held the suspect at gunpoint until the police arrived. As a result of the struggle with the residents the suspect received multiple facial injuries.
As a result of the investigation, 18 year old Marrell B. Tyler of Merrillville, Indiana was arrested for Burglary, Level 2 Felony. Tyler was transported to Community Howard Hospital for treatment for his injuries and then taken to the Howard County Criminal Justice Center.
