Democratic Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued a warning that the Big Apple could be speeding down the road toward major financial ruin, saying the city is “worse than broke” before announcing plans to scale back key programs. Mamdani, speaking as concerns grow over the city’s budget, Mamdani told residents that New York City is facing massive deficits across multiple sectors.
Among the areas that could suffer painful cuts in funding are libraries, housing vouchers, and other public services New Yorkers have come to rely on in recent years. Mamdani did not provide a detailed breakdown of the cuts, but indicated that reductions would be widespread as city officials try to stabilize the city’s economy.
Housing assistance programs, which the city has relied on heavily to help address affordability and homelessness, are going to be hit hard by budget cuts, which has caused many advocates to become more worried about an increase in displacement and housing insecurity. The library systems in the Big Apple are also going to see their budgets slashed, which could result in fewer operating hours and a reduction in staff and community programming.
According to WABC Radio, Mamdani said the cuts were essential, making the case that the city cannot sustain its current spending levels due to the size of the deficit. “We have to make tough choices now to avoid even worse consequences later,” he explained. The report went on to say that the mayor’s announcement is not going to sit well with community groups and Mamdani’s political opponents.
Those who are in opposition to the mayor’s policies could potentially use the budget cuts to argue that essential services are being slashed while New Yorkers continue to suffer under high costs of living. With budget negotiations ongoing, more details about the depth of the cuts and which neighborhoods and programs will be hit the hardest, should be released in the near future.
Reactions to the announcement on social media were highly critical of Mamdani and his failed left-wing economic policies. One user, who goes by the name Mary, slammed the mayor for not saving money by deporting illegal aliens. “If only he would deport the estimated 500,000 illegals living in New York City, he could solve the housing crisis, save the city millions of dollars each year and lower the crime rate. But that would require common sense,” Mary wrote.
Another individual, Richard Howard, called out Mamdani for campaigning on “free rent for everyone,” writing, “Housing vouchers? Didn’t he run on free rent for everyone? What about the free buses, as soon as he took office he abandoned that idea and raised bus fares!!! How long will it take for New Yorkers to wake up to his lies?”

Someone else replied that they hope the dire straits New York City suffers from socialistic Democratic policies exposes how the left destroys everything. “Love it. Hope the city turns into Detroit 2.0 so the entire world can see how democrats destroy everything they touch. Interesting how it’s said demons cannot create only destroy,” he said.
