Following the Supreme Court’s decision to place limitations on the Voting Rights Act, Republicans in state governments across the South and other parts of the country launched efforts to redraw district lines to make them more in line with the law and less based on arbitrary standards such as race. Drawing districts with race in mind almost always benefits Democrats, according to conservatives.
And while these efforts have proven fruitful in most states around the nation, that is not the case in South Carolina, where a number of Republicans decided to defect and vote against redrawing district lines, which would have helped the GOP gain seats needed to maintain control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections later this year.
Had the effort passed, South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, a Democrat and the state’s sole black member of Congress, would have likely found himself out of a job. However, the GOP in South Carolina’s State Senate failed on May 12, 2026, to push forward the redistricting plan. The Republican Party was attempting to extend the current legislative session to allow time to redistrict the state before the June primary.
According to a report from Yahoo News, the resolution managed to pass the South Carolina House of Representatives, but fell short of the two-thirds majority required to pass the measure into law. And plenty of conservative critics are crying foul after five GOP state senators ditched the party and sided with Democrats to sabotage the measure.
One of those turncoat Republicans was South Carolina Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey, who delivered a speech on the Senate floor defending his decision. “I believe that our state is stronger with vibrant parties. I think we, as a whole, are stronger when we have a clash of ideas. I think that’s true at the national level. I think it’s true at the state level. We are stronger when we have a clash of ideas and we can discuss those policies,” he said. He added, “Republicans are stronger when the Democratic Party is vibrant and viable. We are. Competition makes you better, y’all.”
🚨 HOLY CRAP!! South Carolina Senate Leader Shane Massey (R) blocked 2026 redistricting because, HIS WORDS: "South Carolina is stronger" when "we have a vibrant and viable Democratic Party"

As you might imagine, Massey’s actions are being viewed by many MAGA supporters as a betrayal of the Republican Party and the values it stands for, as well as a betrayal of President Trump. Many are now referring to Massey as a “Republican In Name Only” or RINO, and have vowed to get their revenge for his political adultery by ensuring he doesn’t remain long in his current seat. Political commentator and filmmaker Robby Starbuck responded to a post on social media platform X calling out Massey for being a Benedict Arnold, saying, “Shane won’t be winning that seat again.”

Another individual responded to Robby’s post saying, “Let me know what I can do to make sure of this,” referring to contributing toward the goal of primarying Massey. A user also called out Massey as being, “Another RINO traitor who hates President Trump.” Someone else noted that if the GOP loses control of the House, the blame will fall on Massey.
“If Democrats take back the House by even a single seat next fall, he’ll be the one to blame for the inevitable circus of subpoenas, investigations, and yet another sham impeachment campaign against President Trump,” the individual wrote. Conservative activist Rhein Amacher predicted that Massey “will get a primary opponent in 2028.”
