A woman in a bar on New Year’s had a horrific realization as she came to learn that a cocktail she ordered that night cost $2,400. Thanks to her initial post, along with a follow-up after the ordeal had been handled, we are able to see exactly what transpired when she ordered and downed a drink that was far beyond her financial capacity to pay.
While celebrating the end of 2023 and welcoming the arrival of 2024, Lynsey Bennett was drinking in a bar in Belfast, Ireland, when she made the massive error. Plenty of people find that they racked up a much higher bill than anticipated however this one may take the cake.
After a night in which Bennett and her husband traveled around town enjoying the local nightlife in Belfast, they made their way back home to the hotel bar to finish off the year 2023. That all turned into a nightmare when she decided to order a cocktail with the number 1890 next to it. While some would immediately assume that to be the price, Bennett claims that she misunderstood.
During a now-viral TikTok that she posted about the ordeal, she said, “I always drink champagne, I rarely drink cocktails.” That lack of knowledge about cocktails led to a shocking realization as the bill arrived, showing that the couple owed well in excess of 2,000 United States Dollars for that one drink alone.
To date, Bennett’s TikTok video has received 193,000 likes since the debacle. In the video, she makes an attempt to explain why it was just a simple mistake that led to the purchase of the drink, not a malicious attempt to scam the bar out of money.
Before explaining how the mishap took place and how it was handled, she started by saying that her husband was “furious” at the bar tab that she accrued with just one drink. The couple, unable to pay the exorbitant price for the drink they ordered, were forced to call over a manager and ask for help.
According to Bennett, the mistake was made because the drink was listed with the price as “1890,” but she says that there was a gap between the first two and last two letters. This led her to believe that the price of the drink was 18.90 instead of 1,890. She quickly admitted that other drinks on the menu had a decimal point, so she should have known that the drink was worth 100 times what she thought.
Since it was a five-star hotel, she explained that the manager was calm when he handled the issue, speaking quietly as not to embarrass the couple any further. Apparently, all of this trouble was for not as the woman did not even enjoy the drink, complaining that it contained too much whiskey. The drink contained Crystal, Cognac, and gold leaf as well.
It appears that matters were resolved in a rather unexciting way in the end. The couple does not seem to have had to pay for the drink and the bartender is undergoing training to make sure that he knows how to inform guests of the price of drinks before they are ordered. He kept his job in the end.
