Recently, two new video games that were criticized for embracing leftist content, such as diversity equity and inclusion (DEI), completely flopped in the continual backlash against woke entertainment across all forms of media. However, another video game that left out socially and politically charged themes is proving to be a resounding success.
Concord, a first-person online shooter game, was released on August 23. However, the video game created by Firewalk Studios and published by Sony announced it was shutting down on September 6 and would be issuing refunds to those who bought the game. Reports indicate that on launch, Concord only managed to attract 697 concurrent players worldwide.
According to reports about the game, Concord featured cartoon-like DEI-themed characters who had their pronouns specified so as not to be misgendered in the virtual world. Speaking about the failure of the game, PlayStation Director Ryan Ellis claimed that “while many qualities of the experience resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects of the game and our initial launch didn’t land the way we’d intended.”
Just days before, another video game title, Dustborn, had an unenthusiastic launch. The game developed by Red Thread and published by Quantic Dream was described as having a liberal setting featuring woke characters. According to Forbes, Dustborn is “among the most unrepentantly liberal and left-leaning games out there.” However, the game only attained a peak of 83 players, eventually falling to an average around the mid-20s.
“Dustborn emphasizes the power of words and the importance of building an inclusive society where everyone belongs,” one person commented on the new game. “Is that so PC Gamer? Me looking at the game in any detail, it seems to indicate that its doing everything in its power creating the complete OPPOSITE in every way.”
Meanwhile, the Chinese game “Black Myth: Wukong,” which was released in late August, has enjoyed smashing success. Within three days of debuting, over 10 million copies were sold. Notably the game omits any trace of a woke or leftist agenda and focuses solely on an engaging story of the ancient Chinese novel from the 16th Century, “Journey to the West.”
Furthermore, “Black Myth” went above and beyond to ensure that controversial politics would not make its way into the game. In a leaked list of requests to creators, asked that they “Do NOT insult other influencers or players, Do NOT use any offensive language/humor, Do NOT include politics, violence, nudity, feminist propaganda, fetishization and other content that instigates negative discourse, Do NOT use trigger words such as ‘quarantine’ or ‘isolation’ or ‘COVID-19’, Do NOT discuss content related to China’s game industry, policies, opinions, news, etc.”
The American Tribune recently reported on backlash to other woke entertainment after the latest show in the Star Wars franchise, “The Acolyte” was canceled after just one season. Furthermore, fans were so displeased with the show that a petition was started to de-canonize “The Acolyte” from the Star Wars universe.
The petition reads, “Like so many fans of Star Wars, I found the show the acolyte absolutely frustrating. For some it might’ve been the abysmal writing, the ever-changing character motivations, or the awkward cinematography and strange jump cuts. The show was completely misdirected. For others could be the multiple ways the show breaks canon, jangles keys of established characters damaging them in the future or the way the show makes the prophecy of the chosen one completely insignificant. Help me show Disney that we want to reset the prequel era back to George’s original vision that I know so many of us love.”
