Leftist Star Wars actor Mark Hamill tried to organize a Twitter boycott day on August 1 to push back against Elon Musk’s ownership of the company. The left has hated Musk’s tenure as Twitter’s, now known as X, boss and has spent copious amounts of effort and emotional energy trying to prove that his pro-free speech running of the platform is evil.
Replying to another user who called for the boycott, Hamill said, “This will only be effective if EVERYONE refrains from tweeting (X-ing?) on August 1st a/k/a #TweetlessTuesday. Let’s show the owner the POWER OF THE PEOPLE. Honestly, would it kill you to keep your thoughts to yourself for 1 d— day? Read a book!”

X user Sgt Pepper seems to have been the first to come up with the boycott, receiving 6.2 million views on their Tweet at the time of writing this article. Pepper wrote, “I am proposing that August 1st be a “Tweet Out” day where blue voters take the day off from tweeting. Think of the revenue lost for Twitter – X if we did that. Best way to affect change with a billionaire is to hit them in the wallet. RT if you are with me.”
X likely felt very little of the effect of this boycott, as users of the app noted little to no change to the number of Tweets that they were able to engage with on August 1. While the company has received backlash from all over the internet during its rebranding from Twitter to X, CEO Linda Yaccarino saw no reason for concern and called the shift “momentous” in a letter to employees.
Yaccarino promised that X would continue to strive to be the leading social media platform when it comes to invention and innovation. “Our company uniquely has the drive to make this possible,” she wrote. “Many companies say they want to move fast — but we enjoy moving at the speed of light, and when we do, that’s X. At our core, we have an inventor mindset — constantly learning, testing out new approaches, changing to get it right and ultimately succeeding.”
Yaccarino goes on to espress some of the exciting new ways that X plans to transform. “The best news is we’re well underway,” she said. “Everyone should be proud of the pace of innovation over the last nine months — from long form content, to creator monetization, and tremendous advancements in brand safety protections. Our usage is at an all time high and we’ll continue to delight our entire community with new experiences in audio, video, messaging, payments, banking — creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.”
So, while some leftists like Mark Hamill would like to see X burn to the ground due to Elon Musk’s dictate for the cancellation of ideas, the company seems to be turning a corner to become one of the most comprehensive internet companies the world has seen to date.
