In a decision that provoked widespread outcry, in 2023, a judge sided with pop star Katy Perry, ruling that she was the rightful owner of a $15 million Montecito mansion and dismissing veteran Carl Westcott’s claim that he was too mentally infirm to transfer the property.
For context, although the judge said that the veteran was “coherent, engaged, lucid, and rational,” his son Chart Westcott, condemnned Perry’s lack of empathy, and called her a “spoiled brat” for exploiting his bedridden father. While the initial verdict was made in favor of Perry, the trial is still ongoing, and the next stage will occur later this year.
In any case, the judge providing over the initial case dismissed the alegations from the Westcott family, writing, “Westcott presented no persuasive evidence that he lacked capacity to enter into a real estate contract between June 10, 2020, and June 18, 2020, the days during which he negotiated and signed the contract, adding, “[Westcott seemed] coherent, engaged, lucid, and rational.”
However, Chart Westcott was enraged by the situation and blamed actor Orlando Bloom, the pop star’s partner, for refusing to testify. He said, “It absolutely is [an injustice that Orlando Bloom won’t testify],” claiming Orlando Bloom “told our property manager he was ‘in charge of repairs’ and in addition to that, he is on the LLC that owns the house as a manager.”
Continuing his denunciation, the yonger Westcott added, “I wasn’t surprised and I understand the judge’s desire to avoid a media circus but the reality is that everything these two people do, Katy and Orlando, is in the media and also like just because they have media attention doesn’t excuse them from the obligations that the court can put them under and it shouldn’t. That’s a two-tier celebrity privilege standard, and that’s not OK.”
Describing Perry’s cruelties in the face of his father’s suffering, he added, “Katy could’ve walked away at any time with grace and humanity. Instead, she has chosen to fight a dying man in court, all for money.” Explaining his father’s medical situation, he added, “He’s spending his days in a hospital bed and Katy Perry is spending her days trying to get his money.”
Winding down his remarks, he continued to blast the musician. He declared, “Avoiding accountability for her immoral and wrong choices is basically a hallmark of her. She’s essentially a giant spoiled brat, you know, I mean it, like to boil it down. I mean, her fake compassion, her fake empathy. It’s all bulls**t. You know, she’s a greedy b**ch.” Adding, “I just can’t believe she hasn’t even apologized. She hasn’t even said, ‘Sorry, we’re putting you through this.’ It’s disgusting.”

Similarly, Westcott’s Attorneys issued a scathing statement. The lawyers wrote, “Perry’s game is clear. During years of litigation, she asserted $3.25 million in loss of use damages. But immediately after the [decision], providing that she would pay $9 million of the $15 million price … was approved by the Court, she is trying to add $2.29 million in ‘new damages’ which brings her total damages claim up to $5.4 million, an amount close to the $6 million she still owes.”
