Speaking with CBS host Margaret Brennan on CBS’ “Face the Nation” program on Sunday, January 5, incoming Trump Administration border czar Tom Homan said that deportations of illegal immigrants on a massive scale are coming whether those countries to where they will be deported like it or not, and that such concerns will not slow down the administration.
Beginning, Homan said, commenting on Trump’s leadership on illegal immigration, “Well, first of all, we have President Trump coming in the Oval Office and he’s proven during his first administration. His leadership on illegal immigration was the game-changer, because for instance, El Salvador wouldn’t take back MS-13 members when I was the ICE director.”
He continued, noting that Trump was able to make things change in America’s favor quite quickly, saying, “It took President Trump 48 hours to get El Salvador to take back their criminal aliens into their prisons. Mexico didn’t want to do the ‘Remain in Mexico’ program, but President Trump was able to get ‘Remain in Mexico’ established in Mexico. He was able to get Mexico [to] put military in the southern and northern border. President Trump’s a strong president.”
Building on that, Homan noted that there are many ways to handle deportations and that there are ways of dealing with countries that don’t want to take their citizens or subjects back. He said, “This administration has not forced these countries to take them back and we have what we call a third safe country. We already have countries talking about taking back people from other countries. For instance Venezuela doesn’t take their people back. There’s other ways we can do it. There’s other countries [who’d] be willing to accept them.”
Homan then noted that, though there other ways of dealing with it, he is hoping that Trump will just force Venezuela to take the illegal immigrants and criminals back, saying, “We’re hoping that President Trump will work with Venezuela like he did with Mexico and El Salvador and get these countries to take them back. If they don’t, they’re still gonna be deported, they’re just gonna be deported to a different country.”
Then, forcefully stating that America will not be held back by the concerns of the countries from which the illegal immigrants originally came, Homan said, “We’re not gonna be held up on removing public safety threats in this country. We have to put the safety of the American people first. We’ve had too many young women murdered and raped and burned alive by members of Venezuelan gangs. They need to be a priority under this administration. It’s [going to] be a priority starting day one and they will be deported.” Watch him here:
Trump, announcing on Truth Social that Homan would be his Border Czar, said, “I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders (‘The Border Czar’), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security.”
He then went on to add, “I’ve known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders. Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long awaited for, job.”
