Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who is practically ancient at the extremely ripe old age of 87, recently refused to say whether an individual who is 100 years old should be allowed to serve in Congress during an exchange with a TMZ producer on Capitol Hill. The producer pressed Waters on whether elected officials serving the public need to have age limits.
Waters tried to argue that politicians should be judged by voters on their “performance and effectiveness” instead of their age, as she walked into the Capitol Building. “People should evaluate who should be in office with their vote, and that’s it,” the California Democrat said. The exchange started when TMZ producer Jacob Wasserman came up to Waters following a Working Families press conference and asked her what she would tell younger Americans who think some in Congress are too hold to stay in power.
At first, Waters said that voters should look at elected officials’ records. “What do they do? What can you document? What can you give them credit for? What can you criticize them for?” Waters told Wasserman. “If you do what it takes to evaluate, then you can decide.” Wasserman followed up by saying voters should judge politicians by what they do rather than their age, Waters responded, “Performance and effectiveness.”
The discussion pivoted to President Donald Trump as Wasserman asked if an 80-year-old president was “a little too old,” pointing out that “a lot of people had issues with Biden’s age,” the New York Post reported. Waters decided she’d had enough at that point and refused to talk about Trump’s age, turning to his record instead.
“The president of the United States is destroying our democracy,” Waters told the producer. “He’s made unkept promises. He is enriching himself and his family with cryptocurrency.” The California Democrat then slammed President Trump, accusing him of being “absolutely committed to empowering himself” and said that voters would ultimately decide his fate.
“I think some people are having buyer’s remorse, and we see it in the polls,” Waters went on to say. “In the final analysis, it is the people who will finally determine that this president is dangerous and divisive.” The TMZ producer then asked the congresswoman whether there should be an age limit to be president. “People should be evaluated and thought of in terms of what they do,” Waters answered.
He then followed up by asking whether a “hundred-year-old fighter” should still occupy the office. Waters once again said it’s up to voters. “The people should evaluate who should be in office with their vote, and that’s it,” she remarked. The Post has reached out to the White House for a comment on the matter, but as of this writing, there has been no response.

A person responding to the story on X expressed a desire to see term limits placed on public servants in the government, writing, “Term limits, guys. We need term limits for THIS very reason.” Another user joked, “She’s just about to hit her prime.” Perhaps the funniest response was a meme of Waters making a sour face with the caption, “If farts had a face.”
