During a Senate floor speech amid a prolonged DHS funding impasse and partial government shutdown now reaching 35 days, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) appeared to slip, saying “We must fund ICE… we must fund TSA now” before correcting to focus on TSA.
Conservatives and President Trump pounced, calling it a Freudian slip revealing Democrats’ true position on Immigration and Customs Enforcement funding, which they’ve blocked over demands for reforms. Trump mocked Schumer as “discombobulated” on Truth Social, then sarcastically agreed: “Thank you, Chuck, I agree!”
The incident came after Elon Musk offered to pay the salaries of TSA employees so that they can get back to work. “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.” It was in the wake of that, and the general dissatisfaction with the shutdown, that Schumer freaked out.
Online reactions to the senator’s entertaining gaffe ranged from hilarity and accusations of hypocrisy to defenses that it was no big deal. Separately, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) criticized Schumer for opposing the SAVE America Act, calling it grandstanding amid low Democratic approval.

Reacting to the hilarious comments, a user wrote, “Sounds less like a slip and more like acknowledging the role agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Transportation Security Administration actually play.”
Another response pointed out, “This is not remarkable. It’s a major flip-flop from someone who does not care about his fellow Americans, does not care about Democracy, and frankly should not be in office.” A conservative quipped, “We must fund DHS! Get it done. AND PASS SAVE AMERICA ACT.”

“Chuck Schumer is trying to pull the wool over the American people’s eyes by making it appear that it’s the Republicans’ fault for not funding the TSA, but no one is buying it. American voters can see through his bullsh*t,” an irritated Trump fan declared.
Clearly losing patience, another comment read, “He’s went off SCRIPT one sentence and f***ed it up. Let me remind you that ELECTED OFFICIALS are NOT supposed to NEED SPEAKING AIDS such of entire notebooks they simply READ FROM, so we paying these assholes to just read what OBAMA wants them to? This isn’t even legal.”
Responding to the same clip, the president noted, “Schumer got ‘discombobulated’ in the Senate yesterday, and said, ‘WE MUST FUND ICE,’ prior to correcting himself. Thank you Chuck, I agree! President DJT” laying on the mockery.
Posting another clip of Schumer grandstanding on the SAVE Act, Congressman Steve Scalise (R-LA) blasted the Democrat. “What a joke. Instead of passing the SAVE America Act — legislation backed by the overwhelming majority of Americans — Chuck Schumer and Congressional Democrats are doing whatever this is. No wonder their approval rating is at a record low,” he stated.
